Blood mixed with rainwater across her cheek while the whip still hung frozen in Martha\u2019s shaking hand.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"826\">The stranger spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"844\">\u201cShe\u2019s a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"874\">Amos gave a humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"907\">\u201cIn this town, she\u2019s property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"959\">Several townsfolk lowered their heads immediately.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"984\">Nobody challenged Amos.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"1002\">Nobody ever did.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1136\">But the mountain man slowly removed his gloves instead, fingers scarred and rough from years surviving places harder than Oak Haven.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1138\" data-end=\"1165\">\u201cThat so?\u201d he asked calmly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1200\">The storm seemed louder suddenly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1240\">Amos\u2019s hand tightened on his revolver.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1242\" data-end=\"1273\">\u201cYou got a name, mountain man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1297\">A long pause followed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1304\">Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1320\">\u201cJonah Ridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1367\">Whispers spread instantly through the street.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1369\" data-end=\"1399\">Even Martha\u2019s face lost color.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"1443\">Because people in Colorado knew that name.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1445\" data-end=\"1455\">A trapper.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1466\">A hunter.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1613\">A man who once crossed frozen mountain ranges alone and came back carrying another man over his shoulder through a blizzard no one else survived.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1615\" data-end=\"1654\">Sheriff Amos studied him carefully now.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1670\">More cautious.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1672\" data-end=\"1687\">More dangerous.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1728\">\u201cYou\u2019re far from the mountains, Jonah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1787\">Jonah glanced down briefly toward Hera hiding behind him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1806\">\u201cNot far enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1859\">The words landed heavily in the rain-soaked street.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"1931\">Then Jonah held out one massive hand toward Hera without looking back.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"1947\">\u201cGet up, kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1949\" data-end=\"1964\">Hera hesitated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1966\" data-end=\"1976\">Terrified.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1978\" data-end=\"1989\">Not of him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1991\" data-end=\"2001\">Of hoping.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2003\" data-end=\"2035\">Jonah\u2019s voice softened slightly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2037\" data-end=\"2114\">\u201cYou stay on the ground, they keep treating you like something beneath them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2116\" data-end=\"2161\">Slowly, painfully, Hera reached for his hand.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2163\" data-end=\"2211\">The moment her small fingers wrapped around his\u2014<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2244\">Sheriff Amos drew his revolver.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2246\" data-end=\"2303\">The metallic click echoed through Oak Haven like thunder.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2305\" data-end=\"2378\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">And every person in town realized blood was about to spill in the street.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain hammered the streets of Oak Haven as silence swallowed the entire town.
