Colder this time.<\/p>\n<p>The guard obeyed.<\/p>\n<p>The veil began to lift.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Fabric sliding upward through the torchlit air.<\/p>\n<p>And for a fraction of a second\u2014<\/p>\n<p>before anyone could fully see\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the woman closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Not in fear.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Like she had been waiting for this exact moment longer than the kingdom had existed.<\/p>\n<p>The veil cleared her face.<\/p>\n<p>Silence collapsed instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Not quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Not tension.<\/p>\n<p>Absolute, total stillness\u2014as if the hall itself had forgotten how to react.<\/p>\n<p>A noble dropped his goblet without noticing.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t even clatter.<\/p>\n<p>The sound didn\u2019t seem allowed anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Queen Selene\u2019s expression changed first.<\/p>\n<p>Just slightly.<\/p>\n<p>A flicker.<\/p>\n<p>Then stillness returned\u2014but not the same kind.<\/p>\n<p>Because now it was forced.<\/p>\n<p>Controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Carefully held together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026That\u2019s not possible,\u201d Selene said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>The woman rose to her feet.<\/p>\n<p>No struggle against the chains.<\/p>\n<p>No reaction to the iron collar still locked around her neck.<\/p>\n<p>Just movement\u2014measured and deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>As if she had simply decided gravity no longer applied in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wondering how long it would take,\u201d the woman said.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice carried differently now that she was uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Not louder.<\/p>\n<p>Just\u2026 recognized.<\/p>\n<p>The guards stepped back without being told.<\/p>\n<p>One of them whispered, barely audible:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were told she was contained\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman finally looked up at the throne.<\/p>\n<p>At the Queen.<\/p>\n<p>And smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>Not warm.<\/p>\n<p>Not cruel.<\/p>\n<p>Just familiar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou built this ceremony carefully,\u201d she said. \u201cI almost didn\u2019t recognize the invitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Queen\u2019s fingers tightened on the armrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a prisoner, you speak like you still have a court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman tilted her head slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never lost it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then the iron collar at her neck clicked softly.<\/p>\n<p>Not unlocking.<\/p>\n<p>But responding.<\/p>\n<p>As if something inside it had just received a signal it was designed to obey.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the nobles in the Great Hall realized the truth wasn\u2019t being revealed at all.<\/p>\n<p>It was being <em>activated<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The guards hesitated.
