{"id":3220,"date":"2026-05-18T16:51:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3220"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:51:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:21:17","slug":"part-2-the-thing-beneath-the-flood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3220","title":{"rendered":"PART 2: The Thing Beneath the Flood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The valley didn\u2019t stay silent for long.<\/p>\n<p>The flood kept moving\u2014but it was no longer random.<\/p>\n<p>It was <em>searching<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Like something beneath the water had begun to wake and recognize its shape again.<\/p>\n<p>From the Iron-Hold wall, Roderic tightened his grip on his sword.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d he said hoarsely. \u201cThere were no prisoners in the scouting reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy didn\u2019t look at him.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes stayed fixed on the dark, shifting water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wouldn\u2019t be,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n<p>Another lightning strike carved the valley in white.<\/p>\n<p>For a fraction of a second, the truth was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Not just cages.<\/p>\n<p>Not just chains.<\/p>\n<p>But a massive iron structure embedded into the canyon floor\u2014half temple, half machine\u2014now breaking apart under pressure from the flood.<\/p>\n<p>And it was moving.<\/p>\n<p>Roderic stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026what <em>is<\/em> that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy finally raised one obsidian arrow slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Not aiming.<\/p>\n<p>Not preparing.<\/p>\n<p>Just holding it like he was remembering something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA seal,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>A distant groan rose from beneath the water.<\/p>\n<p>Deep.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient.<\/p>\n<p>Not human.<\/p>\n<p>The surface of the flood began to bulge outward in slow waves, as if something enormous was pressing upward from below.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the war horn sounded again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, it wasn\u2019t coming from survivors.<\/p>\n<p>It was coming from <em>under the water<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Roderic\u2019s voice cracked slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u2026 that horn was from their army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy shook his head once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey borrowed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make sure we opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The valley suddenly convulsed.<\/p>\n<p>The water didn\u2019t just surge outward\u2014it lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Like gravity had forgotten it for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>And from beneath the flood\u2026<\/p>\n<p>something rose.<\/p>\n<p>Not a creature in the normal sense.<\/p>\n<p>A structure.<\/p>\n<p>A colossal black lattice of stone and iron, covered in glowing markings identical to the obsidian arrows.<\/p>\n<p>Roderic stared in horror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a weapon\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s expression darkened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was never meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The structure rose higher, breaking the surface fully now.<\/p>\n<p>And within it\u2014<\/p>\n<p>countless silhouettes were suspended.<\/p>\n<p>Not prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>Not soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>Something older.<\/p>\n<p>Sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting.<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s voice dropped lower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dam wasn\u2019t holding back the river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was holding <em>that<\/em> down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iron-Hold horns behind them changed again\u2014this time into emergency signals.<\/p>\n<p>But no one on the wall moved.<\/p>\n<p>Because everyone had finally understood the same terrifying truth.<\/p>\n<p>The flood didn\u2019t destroy the invasion.<\/p>\n<p>It revealed why the invasion came in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Roderic turned slowly toward the boy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The boy didn\u2019t deny it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trained above it,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>A final crack echoed across the valley as the structure shifted again\u2014like something inside it had just turned its head toward the surface world.<\/p>\n<p>Roderic\u2019s hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why break the dam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy looked out at the rising darkness.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, his voice wasn\u2019t calm.<\/p>\n<p>It was certain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it was waking up anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lifted the last obsidian arrow.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward the structure.<\/p>\n<p>But toward the sky above it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone just sped it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And far beneath the broken flood\u2026<\/p>\n<p>something answered by moving closer to the surface.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The valley didn\u2019t stay silent for long.
