{"id":3210,"date":"2026-05-18T16:40:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3210"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:40:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:10:20","slug":"part-2-the-room-that-shouldnt-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3210","title":{"rendered":"PART 2: The Room That Shouldn\u2019t Exist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The woman froze.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers were still wrapped around the ice-cold handle of the black door, but her body no longer obeyed her.<\/p>\n<p>Behind her\u2014<\/p>\n<p>silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not the peaceful kind.<\/p>\n<p>The kind that feels intentional.<\/p>\n<p>The voice didn\u2019t repeat itself.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, she turned her head.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing stood in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Only chandeliers above her\u2026 swaying slightly, even though there was no wind.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a soft click echoed from inside the black door.<\/p>\n<p>Not unlocking.<\/p>\n<p>Locking.<\/p>\n<p>The realization hit her late.<\/p>\n<p>She had just triggered something.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand pulled back instinctively, but the door didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>It was sealed again.<\/p>\n<p>From the inside.<\/p>\n<p>Her breath quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s there?\u201d she called out, trying to sound steady.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the mansion lights flickered once.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>And the portraits on the wall seemed\u2026 wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Their painted eyes no longer matched her movement.<\/p>\n<p>They were all looking toward the black door.<\/p>\n<p>The voice returned, closer this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t part of the guest list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman stepped back slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Her heel clicked against marble\u2014too loud in the dead silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what room this is,\u201d she said firmly. \u201cI think there\u2019s been a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then a faint sound from behind the door.<\/p>\n<p>A breath.<\/p>\n<p>Slow.<\/p>\n<p>Controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Like someone had been waiting a very long time to speak again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo mistake,\u201d the voice said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mansion remembers who it hides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>She turned slightly toward the corridor behind her\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and realized something worse.<\/p>\n<p>The hallway she came through\u2026 was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Not closed.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>Only a long stretch of identical black doors now lined the corridor in both directions.<\/p>\n<p>Each one unmarked.<\/p>\n<p>Each one identical.<\/p>\n<p>Her mind struggled to process it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t possible\u2026\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The chandeliers above her flickered again.<\/p>\n<p>And this time, when the light returned\u2014<\/p>\n<p>she wasn\u2019t alone in the reflection on the polished floor.<\/p>\n<p>Something stood behind her.<\/p>\n<p>But when she spun around\u2014<\/p>\n<p>nothing was there.<\/p>\n<p>Only the black door.<\/p>\n<p>Still closed.<\/p>\n<p>Still waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Then the handle moved slightly.<\/p>\n<p>From the inside.<\/p>\n<p>The voice returned, quieter now.<\/p>\n<p>Almost familiar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have grown up enough to remember this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Because she didn\u2019t recognize the mansion anymore.<\/p>\n<p>But something deep inside her did.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time\u2014<\/p>\n<p>she wasn\u2019t sure if she had opened the door\u2026<\/p>\n<p>or if the door had finally opened her back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The woman froze.
