The firelight shifted gently across the stone walls, breathing warmth into the ancient chamber.<\/p>\n

But something in the air changed.<\/p>\n

Not suddenly.<\/p>\n

Not violently.<\/p>\n

Just\u2026 a subtle tightening of presence, like the room had noticed something approaching before anyone could see it.<\/p>\n

The wolves were the first to react.<\/p>\n

Not with panic.<\/p>\n

With awareness.<\/p>\n

The grey wolf beneath the woman\u2019s hand lifted its head slightly, ears angling toward the far end of the chamber. One by one, the others followed\u2014not rising, not growling\u2014but turning their attention toward the same unseen point in the darkness.<\/p>\n

The platinum-haired woman didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Her hand remained resting on the wolf\u2019s fur.<\/p>\n

But her gaze shifted.<\/p>\n

Clad in dark travel-worn robes, edges damp from the cold air outside the chamber. His presence did not belong here\u2014not in scale, not in silence, not in the way even the fire seemed to hesitate as he crossed into its light.<\/p>\n

He stopped just beyond the reach of the flames.<\/p>\n

His eyes moved slowly.<\/p>\n

Across the wolves.<\/p>\n

Across the bed of fur pelts.<\/p>\n

Finally settling on her.<\/p>\n

Man (quiet): \u201cYou never left.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s expression didn\u2019t change, but the wolves shifted closer by instinct alone.<\/p>\n

Woman: \u201cNeither did they.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man glanced at the creatures.<\/p>\n

Then back to her.<\/p>\n

Man: \u201cThey should\u2019ve forgotten you by now.\u201d<\/p>\n

A faint, almost sad smile touched her lips.<\/p>\n

Woman: \u201cThey don\u2019t forget what saves them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grey wolf pressed closer to her side again, as if confirming her words.<\/p>\n

The man stepped forward one pace.<\/p>\n

Then stopped again.<\/p>\n

Not from fear.<\/p>\n

From recognition.<\/p>\n

Like crossing further would mean accepting something irreversible.<\/p>\n

Man: \u201cThe bond should\u2019ve broken when the last seal fell.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fire cracked louder for a moment.<\/p>\n

The chamber seemed to listen.<\/p>\n

The woman finally rose from the bed.<\/p>\n

Slowly.<\/p>\n

Barefoot against cold stone.<\/p>\n

The wolves rose with her in perfect synchrony.<\/p>\n

But she raised one hand slightly.<\/p>\n

A quiet command.<\/p>\n

They stopped.<\/p>\n

Not obeying out of fear.<\/p>\n

But trust.<\/p>\n

She stepped forward until she stood just beyond the bed\u2019s edge, closer to the firelight now.<\/p>\n

Her platinum hair caught the glow, turning almost silver-gold.<\/p>\n

Woman: \u201cIt didn\u2019t break.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

Her eyes met his fully now.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt adapted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence stretched between them.<\/p>\n

Heavy.<\/p>\n

Ancient.<\/p>\n

Then the man spoke again, quieter than before.<\/p>\n

Man: \u201cThey\u2019ll come for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman tilted her head slightly.<\/p>\n

Almost curious.<\/p>\n

Woman: \u201cLet them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind her, a low growl rose\u2014but it wasn\u2019t aggression.<\/p>\n

It was agreement.<\/p>\n

The wolves stepped forward together now, forming a crescent behind her.<\/p>\n

Not beasts.<\/p>\n

Not threats.<\/p>\n

Something older.<\/p>\n

Something chosen.<\/p>\n

The fire flared once, casting long shadows that danced across stone like memories waking up.<\/p>\n

The man looked at them all.<\/p>\n

Then exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n

Man: \u201cYou\u2019ve built an army in a place meant to stay empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n

But it carried through the chamber like a vow.<\/p>\n

Woman: \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cI built a home for what they abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wolves lowered their heads slightly at her words.<\/p>\n

The chamber fell into stillness again.<\/p>\n

But now it was different.<\/p>\n

No longer empty.<\/p>\n

No longer waiting.<\/p>\n

And as the fire continued to burn between stone and shadow\u2014<\/p>\n
