The fire snapped sharply, sending sparks into the cold air between them.<\/p>\n

Elias Crowe didn\u2019t lower the rifle fully\u2014but it wasn\u2019t aimed as tightly now.<\/p>\n

His daughter still rested against Margaret\u2019s chest, calm in a way that didn\u2019t make sense in a world like this.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut her down,\u201d Elias said quietly.<\/p>\n

Margaret didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll wake up hungry again,\u201d she answered softly.<\/p>\n

That stopped him for half a second.<\/p>\n

The baby shifted slightly, letting out a small sound\u2014not a cry, just a sleepy breath. Margaret instinctively adjusted her hold, steadying her against the cold draft slipping through the logs.<\/p>\n

Elias noticed something else then.<\/p>\n

The way Margaret\u2019s hands shook wasn\u2019t from fear of him.<\/p>\n

It was exhaustion.<\/p>\n

Deep, long, survival-kind exhaustion.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did you come from?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Margaret hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cNowhere that matters anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the cabin again.<\/p>\n

Outside, the storm slammed harder, as if testing the walls.<\/p>\n

Elias finally stepped closer, slow and cautious, until he could see the baby clearly from just a few feet away.<\/p>\n

Alive.<\/p>\n

Warm.<\/p>\n

Safe.<\/p>\n

That fact alone made his jaw tighten.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe hasn\u2019t slept like that in days,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

Margaret nodded faintly. \u201cBecause she was alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word hit harder than the wind.<\/p>\n

Elias\u2019s grip on the rifle loosened slightly.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

A sharp knock came from the cabin door.<\/p>\n

Once.<\/p>\n

Then again.<\/p>\n

Not wind.<\/p>\n

Not wood settling.<\/p>\n

Knocking.<\/p>\n

Elias turned instantly, rifle snapping back up.<\/p>\n

Margaret froze.<\/p>\n

The baby stayed asleep.<\/p>\n

Another knock followed\u2014closer this time, like whoever was outside already knew they were being watched.<\/p>\n

A voice called through the storm.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrowe\u2026 open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elias went still.<\/p>\n
