Each breath rolled into the freezing air like smoke from something ancient.<\/p>\n<p>The Viking gripping the boy\u2019s shoulder slowly loosened his hand.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time\u2014<\/p>\n<p>fear replaced cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat in Odin\u2019s name\u2026\u201d one warrior whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The beast ignored them.<\/p>\n<p>Completely.<\/p>\n<p>Like armed men with axes weren\u2019t even worth noticing.<\/p>\n<p>Its glowing amber eyes remained locked on only one thing\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the barefoot boy.<\/p>\n<p>The child never ran.<\/p>\n<p>Never cried.<\/p>\n<p>He simply stood there, thin shoulders trembling beneath the torn tunic while the strange black symbol stretched across his back.<\/p>\n<p>The bear stopped directly in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>Close enough for its shadow to swallow the boy completely.<\/p>\n<p>The warriors tightened their grips on weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Certain they were about to watch something terrible.<\/p>\n<p>But instead\u2014<\/p>\n<p>The massive creature lowered itself slowly onto one knee.<\/p>\n<p>Its enormous head bowed.<\/p>\n<p>A deep rumbling sound escaped its chest.<\/p>\n<p>Not rage.<\/p>\n<p>Something softer.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The Viking leader stumbled backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u2026\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>One of the older warriors crossed himself nervously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat beast kills villages,\u201d he muttered. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t kneel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy finally moved.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Carefully.<\/p>\n<p>His small hand lifted toward the scarred animal.<\/p>\n<p>The frozen ruins held their breath.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the grizzly gently pressed its head into the child\u2019s palm.<\/p>\n<p>Like greeting someone it already knew.<\/p>\n<p>The trembling ground returned.<\/p>\n<p>Stronger this time.<\/p>\n<p>Stone dust drifted from the broken pillars.<\/p>\n<p>Something beneath the ruins had awakened.<\/p>\n<p>The Viking who mocked the boy first stepped backward quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d he snapped nervously.<\/p>\n<p>The boy finally looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Cold wind pushed through his dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Calmly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then his eyes shifted toward the fog beyond the ruins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came because they heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The warriors froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey?\u201d one whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The bear slowly lifted its head.<\/p>\n<p>Its ears turned toward the mist.<\/p>\n<p>Listening.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>another sound echoed through the wasteland.<\/p>\n<p>Far away.<\/p>\n<p>Deep.<\/p>\n<p>Too large to be human.<\/p>\n<p>A howl.<\/p>\n<p>Low.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient.<\/p>\n<p>Answered by another.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings slowly turned toward the endless gray fog surrounding the ruins.<\/p>\n<p>Shapes moved between broken pillars.<\/p>\n<p>Large shapes.<\/p>\n<p>Watching.<\/p>\n<p>Circling.<\/p>\n<p>The Viking leader tightened his grip on his axe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you?\u201d he demanded shakily.<\/p>\n<p>The boy looked back at him.<\/p>\n<p>No anger.<\/p>\n<p>No fear.<\/p>\n<p>Only something strangely sad.<\/p>\n<p>Then he answered softly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last person you should have touched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the frozen wasteland no longer felt empty.<\/p>\n<p>It felt surrounded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The frozen ruins went silent.
