Not at first.<\/p>\n
Even the monitors seemed louder in the silence that followed Dylan Harker\u2019s words.<\/p>\n
\u201cI found her.\u201d<\/p>\n
The nurse\u2019s eyes flicked to the child again\u2014then to the bruises on her arms\u2014and her expression tightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not what I asked,\u201d she said carefully.<\/p>\n
Dylan didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n
He adjusted his grip on the girl slightly, as if making sure she was still real.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe wasn\u2019t alone when I got there,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n
That changed the air.<\/p>\n
A security guard near the entrance straightened instantly, hand drifting closer to his radio.<\/p>\n
The little girl buried her face deeper into Dylan\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo\u2026\u201d she whispered, almost soundless.<\/p>\n
A doctor stepped forward now, slower than the nurse, eyes locked on Dylan.<\/p>\n
\u201cSir, we need to know exactly where you found her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dylan\u2019s jaw flexed.<\/p>\n
\u201cOld service road off County 9,\u201d he said. \u201cAbandoned storage units.\u201d<\/p>\n
The nurse exchanged a quick look with the doctor.<\/p>\n
That place had reports.<\/p>\n
Too many reports.<\/p>\n
Dylan finally looked down at the girl again.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her voice barely came out.<\/p>\n
\u201cLila.\u201d<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
Then Dylan asked the question he already feared the answer to.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho did this to you?\u201d<\/p>\n
Lila shook her head quickly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to say.\u201d<\/p>\n
That line hit harder than anything else in the room.<\/p>\n
Because kids don\u2019t say that unless someone taught them to.<\/p>\n
Dylan slowly lifted his gaze toward the glass ER doors behind the nurses.<\/p>\n
Rain blurred the outside world.<\/p>\n
Motorcycles still idled in the ambulance bay.<\/p>\n
But now\u2014<\/p>\n
One of them wasn\u2019t idling anymore.<\/p>\n
It had shut off.<\/p>\n
Clean.<\/p>\n
Intentional.<\/p>\n
Dylan\u2019s grip tightened slightly.<\/p>\n
The nurse noticed. \u201cSir?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLock the doors,\u201d he said calmly.<\/p>\n

The security guard moved immediately.<\/p>\n
Too late.<\/p>\n
The automatic glass doors slid open again anyway.<\/p>\n
Cold rain rushed in.<\/p>\n
And a man stepped into the ER.<\/p>\n
Dry.<\/p>\n
Unbothered.<\/p>\n
Like he hadn\u2019t just crossed a storm.<\/p>\n
He looked straight at Lila.<\/p>\n
Then smiled faintly.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere you are,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n
Dylan shifted his stance instantly, putting his body between them.<\/p>\n
The entire ER changed in a second.<\/p>\n
The nurses backed away.<\/p>\n
