Finally, she spoke.<\/p>\n

Barely.<\/p>\n

The biker didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Just waited.<\/p>\n

Her fingers tightened around the napkin beside her plate.<\/p>\n

The word landed wrong in the room.<\/p>\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n

Not dramatic.<\/p>\n

Just final.<\/p>\n

Somewhere in the diner, a coffee cup stopped halfway to someone\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n

The waitress behind the counter forgot to breathe for a second.<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s expression didn\u2019t change immediately\u2014but something inside it shut down, like a door locking from the inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cSay it again,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

The girl swallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence stretched so tightly it felt like it might snap.<\/p>\n

The biker slowly leaned back in the booth.<\/p>\n

And pulled out a small, cracked photograph.<\/p>\n

He turned it slightly toward the light.<\/p>\n

A younger version of him stood beside a woman holding a baby.<\/p>\n

On the back of the photo, in faded ink, was a single line:<\/p>\n

IF MARROW RETURNS, DO NOT WAIT. RUN.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biker exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n

Then looked at the girl properly for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho told you to come here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Her lips trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom,\u201d she whispered. \u201cBefore they took her\u2026 she said you\u2019d know what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, headlights appeared on the highway.<\/p>\n

Not one.<\/p>\n

Not two.<\/p>\n

Too many to count.<\/p>\n

The biker closed his hand around the photograph.<\/p>\n

And said one word into the silence.<\/p>\n
