The little girl hesitated before slowly sliding into the booth beside Ethan Mercer.<\/p>\n

Her oversized backpack dropped heavily onto the cracked diner floor.<\/p>\n

Too heavily.<\/p>\n

Ethan noticed immediately.<\/p>\n

Around the diner, truckers and bikers quietly pretended not to watch while keeping one eye fixed on the booth near the back.<\/p>\n

Ethan pushed a plate of untouched fries toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, kid?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl stared at the food for a second like she\u2019d forgotten people ate regularly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded once.<\/p>\n

Small.<\/p>\n

Careful.<\/p>\n

Like she wasn\u2019t used to answering simple questions anymore.<\/p>\n

Ethan waited while she grabbed a fry with trembling fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you slept somewhere safe?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n

Sadie lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer hit the diner hard.<\/p>\n

One trucker near the counter quietly cursed under his breath.<\/p>\n

Ethan leaned back slowly, studying the oversized backpack resting beside her boots.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s in the bag?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadie froze instantly.<\/p>\n

Fear flashed across her face so fast it barely looked human.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n

\u201cEasy. I\u2019m not taking it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She swallowed hard before whispering:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

The diner went completely still.<\/p>\n

Ethan stared at her.<\/p>\n

Then slowly looked down at the backpack.<\/p>\n

A tiny sound came from inside.<\/p>\n

Crying.<\/p>\n

Weak.<\/p>\n

Barely there.<\/p>\n

Every biker in the diner straightened at once.<\/p>\n

Sadie hurriedly unzipped the bag just enough to reveal a baby wrapped tightly in blankets inside.<\/p>\n

No older than a few months.<\/p>\n

Sleeping.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s expression cracked for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadie\u2019s eyes filled with panic immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t call anybody,\u201d she whispered quickly. \u201cThey\u2019ll take him away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan looked back at her carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s chasing you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n

She glanced toward the dark diner windows.<\/p>\n

Then quietly answered:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe men who killed my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, headlights suddenly appeared on the empty desert highway.<\/p>\n

Three black SUVs turned slowly into the diner parking lot beneath the flickering neon sign.<\/p>\n

Engines idling.<\/p>\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n

Sadie stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey found us,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The entire diner changed instantly.<\/p>\n

Truckers stood up from their booths.<\/p>\n

Leather creaked as bikers reached for jackets and gloves.<\/p>\n

Ethan Mercer slowly rose from his seat beside the little girl.<\/p>\n

Then he looked toward the men stepping out of the SUVs.<\/p>\n
