The brass key sat between them beneath the flickering diner light.<\/p>\n

ROOM 12.<\/p>\n

The biker stared at it without blinking, his scarred fingers slowly tightening against the edge of the table.<\/p>\n

Around the caf\u00e9, nobody moved.<\/p>\n

Not the waitress.<\/p>\n

Not the truckers near the window.<\/p>\n

Even the ceiling fan seemed louder now.<\/p>\n

The little girl finally lifted her eyes slightly, just enough for him to see the fear inside them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said nobody would look there,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The biker picked up the key carefully.<\/p>\n

Old brass.<\/p>\n

Worn edges.<\/p>\n

Sunset Trails Motel.<\/p>\n

Three miles west down Route 66.<\/p>\n

His jaw hardened instantly.<\/p>\n

Because he knew that motel.<\/p>\n

Knew the kind of men who rented rooms there by the hour and paid cash to avoid questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, kid?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long were you in Room 12?\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s fingers trembled around the untouched lemonade.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer hollowed the room.<\/p>\n

Outside, desert heat shimmered above the empty highway while a distant motorcycle engine slowly approached the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

The biker noticed immediately.<\/p>\n

So did Emma.<\/p>\n

Her face drained of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe found me,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The engine grew louder.<\/p>\n

Closer.<\/p>\n

Then stopped outside.<\/p>\n

Boots hit gravel.<\/p>\n

Heavy.<\/p>\n

Unhurried.<\/p>\n

The diner door creaked open beneath the buzzing neon sign.<\/p>\n

A tall man stepped inside wearing mirrored sunglasses and a black denim jacket despite the brutal heat outside.<\/p>\n

The moment Emma saw him, she froze completely.<\/p>\n

The biker leaned back slowly in the booth, placing the motel key into his vest pocket.<\/p>\n

The man smiled faintly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s voice stayed calm enough to make the entire caf\u00e9 nervous.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

Then his eyes dropped toward the brass key now hidden inside the biker\u2019s vest.<\/p>\n
