No animals. No wind movement near the ridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another burst of gunfire ripped overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Eli pointed toward the canyon entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted us deeper before triggering the second line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The squad slowly realized what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>The ambush wasn\u2019t random.<\/p>\n<p>It was designed.<\/p>\n<p>Layered.<\/p>\n<p>Precise.<\/p>\n<p>A kill box meant to trap them from both sides.<\/p>\n<p>One soldier stared at Eli in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou figured that out in seconds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes kept moving constantly.<\/p>\n<p>Watching.<\/p>\n<p>Calculating.<\/p>\n<p>Then suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole followed his gaze toward a narrow cliff opening high above the ridge.<\/p>\n<p>At first, it looked like shadow.<\/p>\n<p>Then movement.<\/p>\n<p>A hidden sniper position.<\/p>\n<p>Watching the retreat path.<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s face hardened instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re waiting for us to run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole grabbed his rifle tighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what do we do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The young private answered quietly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stop following their pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another explosion shook the canyon behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Dust and smoke swallowed the road.<\/p>\n<p>The radio operator screamed into comms for extraction but only static answered back.<\/p>\n<p>No support.<\/p>\n<p>No air cover.<\/p>\n<p>Completely isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Panic began spreading through the squad again.<\/p>\n<p>Then Eli pointed toward the canyon wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an old irrigation tunnel behind those rocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several soldiers looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow the hell would you know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Too long.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered softly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this valley was used before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole stared at him sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli ignored the question.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he grabbed smoke grenades from a fallen pack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we retreat normally, we die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gunfire above intensified.<\/p>\n<p>The enemy knew exactly where they were pinned.<\/p>\n<p>Eli pulled the pin from the first grenade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seconds later\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Smoke exploded across the canyon floor.<\/p>\n<p>The squad sprinted toward the hidden tunnel entrance while bullets tore through the empty position they had just abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>Cole barely made it inside before another explosion collapsed part of the canyon behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Darkness swallowed the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy breathing echoed through the narrow underground passage.<\/p>\n<p>One wounded soldier finally whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you, Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question hung in the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>Eli stayed silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then the radio crackled unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>Not static this time.<\/p>\n<p>A voice.<\/p>\n<p>Cold.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Iron Feather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every soldier froze.<\/p>\n<p>Cole\u2019s eyes widened instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in the squad knew that name.<\/p>\n<p>But Eli did.<\/p>\n<p>Because his face lost all color.<\/p>\n<p>The voice continued through the radio:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe finally found you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence consumed the tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>The wounded soldiers looked between each other nervously.<\/p>\n<p>Cole slowly turned toward Eli.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the hell is Iron Feather?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u2019s breathing became uneven for the first time all day.<\/p>\n<p>Then, deep inside the tunnel ahead of them\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a light suddenly switched on.<\/p>\n<p>Not natural light.<\/p>\n<p>Artificial.<\/p>\n<p>Old military floodlights flickering awake underground.<\/p>\n<p>The squad stared into the darkness in horror.<\/p>\n<p>Because buried beneath the canyon\u2026<\/p>\n<p>someone had already been waiting for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Smoke flooded the canyon.
