floor.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in the diner moved.<\/p>\n<p>Not the waitress gripping the coffee pot behind the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Not the old trucker near the jukebox.<\/p>\n<p>Not even Travis Boone.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl clung tighter beneath his arm, shaking so hard he could feel it through the soaked yellow raincoat.<\/p>\n<p>the little girl buried her face against his side as the man stared down at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d appreciate it if you handed her over,\u201d the scar-faced stranger said calmly.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong tone.<\/p>\n<p>Too controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Too rehearsed.<\/p>\n<p>Travis leaned back slightly in the booth, eyes unreadable beneath the neon glow flickering across the diner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKid looks pretty clear about not wanting to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man smiled faintly. \u201cChildren panic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl shook her head violently. \u201cNo\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe killed my dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence crashed through the diner.<\/p>\n<p>Even the thunder outside suddenly felt distant.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger\u2019s smile disappeared instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Travis noticed that.<\/p>\n<p>So did everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>One of the men behind the scar-faced stranger muttered quietly, \u201cWe\u2019re wasting time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl looked up at Travis with tears streaming down her cheeks. \u201cPlease don\u2019t let them take me back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back.<\/p>\n<p>Not home.<\/p>\n<p>Back.<\/p>\n<p>Important difference.<\/p>\n<p>Travis slowly set down his coffee mug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Katie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man answered immediately. \u201cHer name\u2019s Ava.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katie panicked harder. \u201cDon\u2019t listen to him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tension inside the diner tightened like wire.<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>headlights suddenly swept across the rain-covered windows.<\/p>\n<p>Another SUV pulled into the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Too many.<\/p>\n<p>Way too many for a missing child.<\/p>\n<p>Travis glanced toward the glass briefly and saw dark figures stepping out into the Nevada storm.<\/p>\n<p>Organized.<\/p>\n<p>Armed.<\/p>\n<p>That changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly is so important about this little girl?\u201d Travis asked quietly.<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>Katie suddenly reached into her raincoat pocket with trembling fingers.<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man moved fast. \u201cStop her!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled out a small cassette tape sealed inside a plastic sandwich bag.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Water-stained.<\/p>\n<p>But protected carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The moment the men saw it\u2014<\/p>\n<p>fear crossed every face.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear.<\/p>\n<p>Katie shoved it into Travis\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mama said if anything happened\u2026\u201d She struggled to breathe evenly. \u201c\u2026give this to somebody scary enough to protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire diner watched Travis stare at the tape.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten label barely remained visible beneath water damage:<\/p>\n<p>SHERIFF VALE \u2014 AUGUST 12<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man\u2019s calm finally cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what that contains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis slipped the tape slowly into his jacket pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the men near the door reached inside his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Instantly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>chairs scraped backward across the diner floor as three truckers stood at once.<\/p>\n<p>An older mechanic quietly pulled a revolver from beneath the counter.<\/p>\n<p>The waitress locked the front door without saying a word.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody there knew exactly what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>But they all recognized hunted fear when they saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Katie clung tighter to Travis\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, rain hammered the neon diner sign while black SUVs surrounded the building beneath the storm-dark Nevada sky.<\/p>\n<p>The scar-faced man lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis finally stood.<\/p>\n<p>Massive.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Dangerous in the quietest possible way.<\/p>\n<p>Every sound inside the diner seemed to disappear as he moved Katie carefully behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked directly at the scar-faced man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou boys came into the wrong diner tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lightning flashed white across the
