\nThe smell of popcorn and cotton candy drifted through the warm evening air.<\/p>\n
And racing through the middle of it all\u2014<\/p>\n
was the giant yellow Labrador.<\/p>\n
Still covered in melted pink ice cream.<\/p>\n
The dog sprinted happily between laughing crowds while two children chased behind him together.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome back!\u201d
\n\u201cThat\u2019s our ice cream thief!\u201d<\/p>\n
The little girl in the yellow dress laughed so hard she nearly tripped while the young boy pointed ahead excitedly.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe went that way!\u201d<\/p>\n
The argument from earlier was completely forgotten now.<\/p>\n
No anger.
\nNo tears.<\/p>\n
Only laughter beneath the glowing carnival lights.<\/p>\n
The Labrador suddenly darted around a carousel platform before disappearing beneath strings of golden lanterns.<\/p>\n
The children hurried after him\u2014<\/p>\n
then stopped suddenly.<\/p>\n
The dog sat quietly beside an elderly man resting alone on a wooden bench near the edge of the fair.<\/p>\n
Gray beard.
\nOld denim jacket.
\nGentle tired eyes.<\/p>\n
The Labrador happily dropped something into the man\u2019s lap.<\/p>\n
A worn red baseball cap.<\/p>\n
The old man blinked in surprise before laughing softly.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell now\u2026 there you are, Rusty.\u201d<\/p>\n
The children slowly approached while catching their breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s your dog?\u201d the boy asked.<\/p>\n
The elderly man nodded with an embarrassed smile.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe likes stealing food more than behaving.\u201d<\/p>\n
The little girl crossed her arms dramatically.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe ate my whole ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rusty wagged his tail proudly like it was an accomplishment.<\/p>\n
The old man sighed and slowly reached into his coat pocket.<\/p>\n
Then handed both children colorful carnival tickets.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I owe you two replacements.\u201d<\/p>\n
The kids stared at the tickets in shock.<\/p>\n
Enough for giant ice creams.
\nGames.
\nEven rides.<\/p>\n
Rusty barked excitedly beside the bench while carnival lights reflected across the happy crowd around them.<\/p>\n
Moments later\u2014<\/p>\n
the children sat together near the Ferris wheel each holding enormous new ice cream cones.<\/p>\n
This time\u2014<\/p>\n
they laughed every time Rusty came too close.<\/p>\n
And nearby\u2014<\/p>\n
the elderly man watched quietly with a soft emotional smile while the Labrador rested happily at his feet.<\/p>\n
Because sometimes\u2014<\/p>\n
