2: The Heir the Kingdom Buried

The shattered royal great hall trembled beneath falling dust and burning torchlight.

Stone pillars cracked.

Smoke rolled across the marble floor.

And yet—

the colossal dragon-beast remained perfectly still before the child.

Its enormous head bowed low beneath the boy’s outstretched hand.

No roar.

No rage.

Only silence.

Hundreds of armored soldiers stood frozen in disbelief across the ruined hall.

King Edric Valen slowly rose from his throne, pale beneath the crown resting on trembling hands.

“That creature slaughtered an entire battalion,” he whispered.

“How is it kneeling?”

The young boy gently rested his forehead against the dragon’s obsidian scales.

And the beast answered with a deep rumbling sound—

not anger.

Recognition.

A knight near the broken staircase lowered his sword shakily.

“…it knows him.”

Then the boy finally spoke.

Quietly.

“You chained him.”

The words echoed through the ruined hall.

Several nobles exchanged nervous glances instantly.

Because nobody spoke to the king that way.

But the child never looked afraid.

Not even surrounded by armed soldiers.

The dragon slowly curled protectively around him instead, massive wings folding through smoke and falling ash like black storms settling over the throne room.

Commander Garrick Thorne stepped forward carefully.

“Boy,” he warned, “move away from that monster.”

The child finally looked up.

And something about his eyes made Garrick stop walking.

Golden.

Faintly glowing beneath the firelight.

The same color as the dragon’s.

The king staggered backward slightly.

“No…”

A terrified noblewoman whispered:

“The old bloodline…”

The boy slowly pulled back the sleeve of his worn coat.

Gasps spread instantly across the court.

Wrapped around his wrist—

dark as burned iron—

was the ancient crest of House House Draven.

The forbidden royal line erased from kingdom history twenty years earlier.

King Edric’s face drained completely of color.

“That mark died with Prince Alaric.”

The boy looked toward him calmly.

“My father disagreed.”

The entire hall exploded into whispers.

Some knights lowered their weapons immediately.

Others backed away from the throne itself.

Because everyone in the kingdom knew the story:

The royal family once bonded with dragons.

Until the bloodline vanished during a palace betrayal nobody was allowed to discuss.

And now—

one of them had returned.

The dragon suddenly lifted its massive head and growled toward the throne.

Not at the soldiers.

At the king.

The sound shook the hall violently.

Commander Garrick stepped protectively before the throne.

“Protect His Majesty!”

But half the guards hesitated.

Confusion spread fast now.

Fear.

Doubt.

The boy slowly turned toward the king.

“Do you remember the Night of Ashes?”

Edric’s breathing changed instantly.

Because only three people survived that night.

And two were supposed to be dead.

“You…” the king whispered shakily.

The boy nodded once.

“You burned my family alive.”

The hall fell silent enough to hear torches crackling.

Then the dragon moved.

One enormous claw slammed into the marble floor before the throne, cracking stone apart like glass.

Nobles screamed.

Guards stumbled backward.

But the child never raised his voice.

Never threatened.

That somehow made him far more terrifying.

“You told the kingdom dragons were monsters,” he said softly.

The beast beside him lowered its head again beside the boy’s shoulder.

“But they only bowed to the rightful blood.”

King Edric looked around desperately now.

Because the court itself was changing.

People were kneeling.

One by one.

Not to the throne.

To the child.

Commander Garrick stared at the golden-eyed boy in horror.

“…who are you?”

The child looked toward the shattered ceiling where moonlight now poured through drifting smoke.

Then back toward the kingdom that betrayed his bloodline.

“My name,” he said quietly, “is Lucien Draven.”

The dragon roared so violently the stained-glass windows exploded outward across the palace walls.

And deep beneath the ruined great hall—

ancient dragon
