Rain slammed against the porch light. Thunder rolled low and heavy, shaking the wooden frame of the house.

And then he saw her.

A little girl.

Barefoot. Soaked to the skin. Hair stuck to her face in wet strands. She stood there trembling, small fingers gripping the edge of his doorframe like it was the only solid thing left in the world.

Her voice broke before she even spoke properly.

Girl:
“Please… you have to help me.”

Daniel instinctively looked around the empty street. No car lights. No adults. Only the storm swallowing everything beyond the porch.

He crouched slightly.

Daniel:
“Hey… where are your parents?”

The girl shook her head quickly, panic rising in her eyes.

Girl:
“My mom… she won’t wake up.”

A long silence followed.

Then she pointed—slowly—across the street.

To a house Daniel had seen for years… but never once seen alive.

Dark windows. Broken fence. No movement. No light. Ever.

Daniel hesitated.

Something about the way she said won’t wake up didn’t sound like a child describing sleep.

It sounded final.

He grabbed a flashlight.

Daniel:
“Okay. Show me.”

The girl turned immediately, as if she had been waiting for that answer all along.

They crossed the street together, rain hitting harder with every step. The world behind Daniel’s house faded into a blur of water and thunder, until only that abandoned house remained—standing too still, too patient.

The door was already slightly open.

Not forced.

Not broken.

Just… waiting.

Inside, the air changed instantly.

Cold. Dry. Wrong.

The girl walked in first.

Daniel followed.

His flashlight cut through the darkness, revealing a living room covered in dust so untouched it looked preserved rather than abandoned. A TV sat frozen on a blank screen. A kettle rested on the stove like someone had just stepped away.

But nothing moved.

Not even dust in the air.

“Hello?” Daniel called softly.

No answer.

Then the girl whispered:

Girl:
“She’s upstairs.”

The staircase creaked under Daniel’s weight as he followed her up. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if the house was remembering him.

At the top, a narrow hallway stretched into darkness.

And at the end… a door slightly open.

The girl stopped outside it.

Did not enter.

Only pointed.

Daniel pushed the door open.

The room inside was a child’s bedroom.

A bed neatly made. Toys lined perfectly on a shelf. A small night lamp still glowing—faint, flickering like it had never been turned off.

But there was something else.

A woman sat on the edge of the bed.

Still.

Too still.

Daniel stepped forward—

and realized she wasn’t sitting.

She was frozen mid-motion.

Like the moment had been paused… years ago.

A cup of water half-raised. Eyes open but empty. A life interrupted without warning.

Daniel’s breath caught.

Behind him, the little girl’s voice turned quiet.

Almost relieved.

Girl:
“She finally woke someone up.”

The flashlight flickered violently.

And in that split second of darkness—

Daniel understood.

The house hadn’t been abandoned.

It had been remembering.

And the girl wasn’t asking for help anymore.

She had already brought him here for a reason.

The knock came again—harder this time.
