The school gym fell completely silent beneath the glowing lights.<\/p>\n

No music.
\nNo laughter.<\/p>\n

Only the sound of tiny breaths and trembling hearts filled the room as the four-star general knelt in front of the little girl.<\/p>\n

In his shaking hands\u2014<\/p>\n

was a sealed letter.<\/p>\n

The folded American flag beside her suddenly felt heavier than ever.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked up at him with watery eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it from my daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

The general swallowed hard before nodding slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several Marines behind him quietly wiped tears from their faces.<\/p>\n

Because hardened soldiers weren\u2019t prepared for this either.<\/p>\n

The general carefully handed her the letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father wrote this before his final mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl\u2019s hands trembled as she opened it slowly.<\/p>\n

Inside, written in uneven handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n

If I can\u2019t make it home\u2026
\nmake sure my little girl still gets her dance.<\/p>\n

The gym erupted into quiet sobs.<\/p>\n

Teachers covered their mouths.
\nParents lowered their heads.<\/p>\n

Even the DJ wiped tears from his eyes.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked down at the letter, struggling to breathe.<\/p>\n

Then the general slowly stood and held out his white-gloved hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father asked us not to let you sit alone tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The child stared at him silently.<\/p>\n

The general\u2019s voice broke completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if you\u2019ll allow it\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind him\u2014<\/p>\n

every Marine in the room stepped forward together.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026we would be honored to dance in his place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl burst into tears instantly.<\/p>\n

And beneath the soft gym lights\u2014<\/p>\n
