The homeless man sat silently in the chair holding the older woman\u2019s fragile hand.<\/p>\n

Tears rolled through the dirt on his face.<\/p>\n

At the foot of the bed\u2014<\/p>\n

the golden retriever rested peacefully on the floor.<\/p>\n

Tail wagging softly every time the man looked down at him.<\/p>\n

Outside the hospital window, city lights flickered against the dark evening sky.<\/p>\n

For a long moment\u2014<\/p>\n

nobody spoke.<\/p>\n

Then weakly\u2014<\/p>\n

the elderly woman opened her eyes.<\/p>\n

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.<\/p>\n
