Every person inside stared at Judge Eleanor Whitmore\u2019s trembling foot beneath the wheelchair.<\/p>\n

The judge herself looked frozen in disbelief.<\/p>\n

For twelve years, her legs had never moved.<\/p>\n

Doctors called it permanent.<\/p>\n

Impossible to reverse.<\/p>\n

Yet now\u2014<\/p>\n

her right foot had twitched beneath the courtroom lights.<\/p>\n

The little girl in the bright green coat stood quietly in front of her, hands folded tightly together.<\/p>\n

\u201cI prayed,\u201d she whispered softly.<\/p>\n

Gasps spread across the gallery.<\/p>\n

The bailiff stepped closer in shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour Honor\u2026 are you alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Whitmore could barely speak.<\/p>\n

Judge Whitmore looked toward the frightened man standing in handcuffs beside the defense table.<\/p>\n

A man accused of robbery after stealing medicine and food for his sick family.<\/p>\n

The judge\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou committed the crime?\u201d<\/p>\n

The father lowered his eyes in shame.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Your Honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you ask for help?\u201d<\/p>\n

His answer broke the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause after a while\u2026 nobody listens to poor people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence crashed over everyone again.<\/p>\n

The little girl quietly walked closer to the judge.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad isn\u2019t bad,\u201d she whispered. \u201cHe was just scared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Whitmore stared at the child for a long moment.<\/p>\n
