Rain poured heavily through the narrow alley as Mr. Vale stood frozen beside his car, staring at the silver half-moon pendant hanging from the little boy\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n

His breathing became uneven.<\/p>\n

Because six years earlier\u2014<\/p>\n

he buried the matching half beside the grave of a woman he once loved more than anything.<\/p>\n

Elena.<\/p>\n

The woman everyone claimed died in a terrible accident while carrying his unborn child.<\/p>\n

The maid slowly lowered her eyes, tears mixing with the rain on her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried,\u201d she whispered shakily.<\/p>\n

The frightened children clung tighter to her coat.<\/p>\n

Mr. Vale could barely speak.<\/p>\n

The little boy looked up innocently.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2026 why is he crying?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question shattered him.<\/p>\n

Because the child\u2019s eyes looked exactly like his own.<\/p>\n

Mr. Vale slowly knelt in the rain, unable to stop staring at the pendant.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n

The little boy touched it carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mommy says it belonged to my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The world around Mr. Vale suddenly felt distant.<\/p>\n

Cars passed somewhere beyond the alley.
\nThunder rolled overhead.<\/p>\n

But none of it mattered anymore.<\/p>\n

He slowly looked back toward the woman he once failed to recognize.<\/p>\n

\u201cElena\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She finally lifted her tear-filled eyes toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told you wanted us gone,\u201d she whispered. \u201cYour father paid people to make sure we disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shock crashed across his face.<\/p>\n

Because his father hated Elena from the beginning.<\/p>\n

Hated her background.
\nHated her poverty.
\nHated the child she carried.<\/p>\n

Mr. Vale\u2019s hands trembled violently.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll these years\u2026\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Elena nodded painfully.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cleaned your offices every night while raising your children alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Children.<\/p>\n

Plural.<\/p>\n

Mr. Vale froze again.<\/p>\n

Slowly, the little girl stepped from behind Elena\u2019s coat.<\/p>\n

Same dark hair.
\nSame eyes.<\/p>\n

His knees nearly gave out beneath him.<\/p>\n

Because he didn\u2019t lose one child six years ago.<\/p>\n

He lost both.<\/p>\n

The little boy tugged gently on his sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not a bad man?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Vale looked at the terrified children standing barefoot in the rain.<\/p>\n

Then at the woman forced to hide from him just to survive.<\/p>\n

And something inside him finally broke completely.<\/p>\n

He removed his expensive coat and wrapped it carefully around both children.<\/p>\n
