Her fingers dug harder into his sleeve, tiny breaths turning sharp with panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s him,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The man removed his gloves slowly, gaze settling on the child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No rush.<\/p>\n<p>No concern.<\/p>\n<p>Like he already knew she couldn\u2019t escape.<\/p>\n<p>Hawk rose to his feet.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>The room shifted with him.<\/p>\n<p>Leather creaked. Boots scraped. Half a dozen bikers quietly stood behind their tables without a word being exchanged.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t seem bothered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should hand her over,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cShe belongs with family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl buried herself against Hawk instantly. \u201cNo\u2014he lies\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawk rested one hand gently against the back of her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, kid?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Ava.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawk nodded once. \u201cAlright, Ava.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked back at the man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says you hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger sighed faintly, like the conversation bored him already.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe bruises easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>But every biker there felt it.<\/p>\n<p>The shift between suspicion and certainty.<\/p>\n<p>Hawk\u2019s expression hardened. \u201cYou got a name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Reeves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few men near the bar exchanged looks immediately.<\/p>\n<p>One muttered under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>Because they knew the name.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Reeves<\/p>\n<p>Not family.<\/p>\n<p>Not safe.<\/p>\n<p>Trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves stepped farther inside the tavern, eyes never leaving Ava.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe ran away from home,\u201d he explained smoothly. \u201cShe gets confused sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava shook violently now. \u201cPlease don\u2019t make me go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawk crouched slightly toward her again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou trust me?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded instantly.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Hawk stood back up, taller somehow than before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said simply.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>The tavern became deathly quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou misunderstand,\u201d Reeves replied carefully. \u201cThis isn\u2019t your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawk glanced down briefly at the bruises on Ava\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walked into my tavern with a scared little girl begging for help,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cNow it\u2019s exactly my business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>headlights appeared through the frosted tavern windows.<\/p>\n<p>More vehicles pulling in.<\/p>\n<p>Engines idling.<\/p>\n<p>Ava saw them too and nearly stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe brought them,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The bikers behind Hawk shifted instantly, hands lowering toward belts, chains, jackets.<\/p>\n<p>Not panic.<\/p>\n<p>Preparation.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves noticed it and smiled faintly. \u201cYou really want to do this over someone you\u2019ve known five minutes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawk\u2019s eyes darkened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tense silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ava spoke again\u2014small, trembling, but clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hurt my mom too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reeves snapped toward her. \u201cAva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp enough to make her flinch.<\/p>\n<p>Hawk saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Every man in the room saw it.<\/p>\n<p>And just like that\u2014<\/p>\n<p>whatever chance Reeves had left disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Hawk stepped forward once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should leave,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves looked around the tavern finally understanding something important:<\/p>\n<p>No one here was moving aside.<\/p>\n<p>Not one.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, SUV doors slammed shut one after another.<\/p>\n<p>More boots approaching.<\/p>\n<p>More men coming.<\/p>\n<p>But inside the tavern\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the bikers stayed calm.<\/p>\n<p>Because men like Hawk had spent their whole lives around predators.<\/p>\n<p>And they knew exactly what one looked like.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves exhaled slowly. \u201cYou don\u2019t know who you\u2019re protecting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawk glanced back briefly at Ava clutching his vest with both hands like it was the only safe thing left in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked Reeves dead in the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d Hawk said softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobody in the tavern moved.
