Deputy Evan Hollis stared into the worn paper bag with disbelief frozen across his face.<\/p>\n

Inside\u2014<\/p>\n

a newborn baby lay wrapped in an old towel, barely moving from the cold.<\/p>\n

A soft gasp spread through the station.<\/p>\n

Officers rushed forward instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The baby\u2019s tiny hands trembled weakly while the little girl clutched the bag tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease,\u201d she whispered again through tears, \u201csave my brother first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deputy Hollis carefully lifted the newborn into his arms while paramedics were called immediately.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

Barefoot.
\nShivering.
\nCompletely alone.<\/p>\n

Hollis knelt beside her gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how far did you walk?\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the highway motel.\u201d<\/p>\n

One officer\u2019s face changed instantly.<\/p>\n

The motel sat nearly four miles away.<\/p>\n

In the freezing rain.<\/p>\n

The entire station grew quiet again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s your mother?\u201d Hollis asked softly.<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s lips trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wouldn\u2019t wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words hit harder than anyone expected.<\/p>\n

Several officers closed their eyes painfully.<\/p>\n

Emma wiped tears from her cheeks with dirty sleeves.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried shaking her,\u201d she whispered. \u201cBut my baby brother wouldn\u2019t stop crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deputy Hollis slowly walked over and wrapped his jacket gently around her shoulders.<\/p>\n

The little girl finally looked up at him.<\/p>\n

Hollis smiled through tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d he whispered. \u201cBecause of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

But before anyone could say another word\u2014<\/p>\n

a patrol officer suddenly rushed into the station holding a motel registry sheet.<\/p>\n

His face had gone completely pale.<\/p>\n

Hollis looked up immediately.<\/p>\n
