Her tiny hands clutched the soaked front of her brother\u2019s hoodie while her entire body trembled beneath the blanket draped around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>And the boy\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the twelve-year-old boy looked exhausted enough to collapse where he stood.<\/p>\n<p>Still, he refused to let go of her.<\/p>\n<p>Huck Darnell noticed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t fear alone.<\/p>\n<p>That was responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>The kind no child should ever carry.<\/p>\n<p>Huck lowered himself carefully in front of the boy again. \u201cWhat\u2019s your name, kid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd your sister?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah looked down at the little girl pressed against him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma coughed weakly against his chest.<\/p>\n<p>One biker near the fireplace cursed softly under his breath after noticing her lips turning pale from cold.<\/p>\n<p>Another disappeared into the back hallway and returned carrying dry socks and oversized sweatshirts.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody asked permission.<\/p>\n<p>The clubhouse had already decided.<\/p>\n<p>The kids were staying.<\/p>\n<p>Huck kept his voice steady. \u201cYou still haven\u2019t told me who you were running from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah\u2019s face tightened instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Then he whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur stepdad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>But every biker there felt it.<\/p>\n<p>Leather shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Jaw muscles tightened.<\/p>\n<p>One older rider slowly set his beer bottle down.<\/p>\n<p>Huck glanced toward the bruises peeking beneath Noah\u2019s sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward the fading handprint visible near Emma\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p>Something dark settled across the clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s his name?\u201d Huck asked quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Noah hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Like even saying it out loud felt dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRay Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Half the room froze.<\/p>\n<p>A biker near the bar muttered, \u201cNo damn way\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray Mercer<\/p>\n<p>Huck\u2019s eyes narrowed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer wasn\u2019t just some drunk abuser.<\/p>\n<p>He ran collections for a local crime outfit operating along the interstate.<\/p>\n<p>Violent.<\/p>\n<p>Connected.<\/p>\n<p>Untouchable\u2014at least to most people.<\/p>\n<p>Noah saw the reaction and panicked slightly. \u201cPlease don\u2019t make us go back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huck answered instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat ain\u2019t happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hit the boy hard enough that his shoulders nearly gave out.<\/p>\n<p>Like nobody had ever said that to him before.<\/p>\n<p>Emma finally lifted her head slightly from Noah\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny tears rolled down her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if we told anybody\u2026\u201d Her voice broke softly. \u201c\u2026he\u2019d make Noah disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence crushed the room.<\/p>\n<p>One biker turned away completely, rubbing both hands over his beard.<\/p>\n<p>Another quietly walked toward the weapons locker near the back office.<\/p>\n<p>Huck noticed that too.<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>headlights suddenly swept across the rain-soaked clubhouse windows.<\/p>\n<p>Engines.<\/p>\n<p>Not motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>SUVs.<\/p>\n<p>The room instantly shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Every biker looked toward the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Noah went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe found us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Floodlights reflected across black vehicles rolling slowly through the muddy parking lot outside the clubhouse gates.<\/p>\n<p>Too many.<\/p>\n<p>Doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Men stepped into the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Huck stood slowly to his full height.<\/p>\n<p>Calm.<\/p>\n<p>Deadly calm.<\/p>\n<p>The kind that frightened people more than yelling ever could.<\/p>\n<p>One biker locked the clubhouse door.<\/p>\n<p>Another killed the music entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Now only thunder and rain filled the silence.<\/p>\n<p>Huck crouched beside Noah one last time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou trust me, kid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah looked toward the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the men coming through the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at Huck.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Huck pulled a heavy revolver from the back of his belt and handed Emma gently to another biker beside the fire.<\/p>\n<p>Then he rolled his shoulders once and stared toward the front entrance as boots splashed through puddles outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake the kids upstairs,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody argued.<\/p>\n<p>Because everyone inside the Iron Vale clubhouse understood the same thing at once:<\/p>\n<p>Those children hadn\u2019t run into a biker clubhouse by accident.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d run into the only place Ray Mercer was about to learn fear existed too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain battered the roof of Iron Vale Riders clubhouse while thunder rolled across the dark hills beyond the floodlights.
