The office phones kept ringing.<\/p>\n

Shrill.<\/p>\n

Endless.<\/p>\n

One after another until the cramped landlord\u2019s office sounded like an alarm nobody could shut off.<\/p>\n

The landlord stared at the flashing lines with sweat rolling down his temples. His hands trembled so badly he knocked over a coffee mug reaching for the nearest receiver.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello?\u201d he stammered.<\/p>\n

Silence answered him.<\/p>\n

Then the line clicked dead.<\/p>\n

Another phone rang immediately.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

Reaper never moved.<\/p>\n

The massive biker stood in the center of the office like something carved from asphalt and violence, gray eyes locked on the terrified man behind the desk.<\/p>\n

Beside him, the little girl held tightly to the back of his leather vest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, kid?\u201d Reaper asked quietly without looking down.<\/p>\n

\u201cLucy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long were you and your mom staying here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucy hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost four months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reaper\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

The apartment building outside wasn\u2019t fit for animals. Mold crawled up the walls. Broken windows were covered with cardboard. The landlord had been threatening eviction for weeks despite knowing the girl\u2019s mother was sick.<\/p>\n

And now Ghost\u2019s daughter had walked into a diner wearing shoes held together with tape.<\/p>\n

One of the bikers behind Reaper cracked his knuckles slowly. \u201cBoss\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Reaper lifted one hand slightly.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

The landlord grabbed another ringing phone with shaking fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWHAT?\u201d he snapped.<\/p>\n

A voice on the other end spoke briefly.<\/p>\n

The landlord\u2019s face lost what little color remained.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re lying.\u201d<\/p>\n

The call ended.<\/p>\n

Reaper finally spoke again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019d they say?\u201d<\/p>\n

The landlord swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy bank accounts\u2026\u201d His voice cracked. \u201cThey\u2019re frozen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another phone rang.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

One of the bikers grinned coldly.<\/p>\n

Ghost\u2019s old network.<\/p>\n

Still alive.<\/p>\n

Still watching.<\/p>\n

Reaper slowly picked up the photograph from the desk again.<\/p>\n

Daniel Cole stood smiling in the picture, raven tattoo visible beneath rolled sleeves, one arm wrapped around Lucy\u2019s mother while she held a baby bundled in pink blankets.<\/p>\n

Taken nine years ago.<\/p>\n

One year before Ghost supposedly died in a warehouse fire outside Reno.<\/p>\n

Reaper looked down at Lucy carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mom ever tell you what happened to your father?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucy shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said people were hunting him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went still again.<\/p>\n

Because that part was true.<\/p>\n

Ghost had vanished after stealing something from the Black Wolves cartel\u2014something valuable enough to ignite a war that buried half the Ravens motorcycle club in the ground.<\/p>\n

The official story claimed Ghost died buying everyone else time to escape.<\/p>\n

But no one ever found a body.<\/p>\n

Reaper stared at the picture harder now.<\/p>\n

A thought slowly turning dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did your mom say before she sent you to us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucy\u2019s fingers tightened around his vest.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said if bad men ever came back\u2026\u201d Tears gathered in her eyes. \u201cI should find the biker with the skull ring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reaper looked down instinctively at the silver skull ring on his hand.<\/p>\n

Ghost used to joke he\u2019d be buried wearing it.<\/p>\n

Then Lucy whispered the words that hollowed the entire room.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said my dad trusted you more than anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reaper looked away sharply.<\/p>\n

Because eight years ago, he was the one who told Ghost to take the deal.<\/p>\n

Take the money.<\/p>\n

Disappear.<\/p>\n

Save his family.<\/p>\n

And if Ghost somehow survived after all this time\u2026<\/p>\n

Then somebody lied to the Ravens.<\/p>\n

A loud motorcycle roared outside the office windows.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

Bikers moved instantly toward the glass.<\/p>\n

Three black SUVs rolled slowly to a stop across the street.<\/p>\n

No plates.<\/p>\n

Tinted windows.<\/p>\n

Reaper\u2019s face darkened immediately.<\/p>\n

The Black Wolves.<\/p>\n

One SUV door opened.<\/p>\n

A tall man stepped out wearing a long black coat despite the heat.<\/p>\n

Half his face was burned with old scar tissue twisting down his neck.<\/p>\n

Lucy gasped beside Reaper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s him,\u201d she whispered fearfully. \u201cThat\u2019s the man Mommy was hiding from.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scarred man looked up toward the office window.<\/p>\n
