The diner went silent except for the low hum of the neon lights.<\/p>\n

The biker stayed crouched in front of the little girl, staring at her like the world had suddenly shifted beneath him.<\/p>\n

\u201cRose\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The name barely left his mouth.<\/p>\n

But everyone near the booth heard it.<\/p>\n

The young man at the counter noticed too.<\/p>\n

And the moment he saw the biker\u2019s expression change\u2014<\/p>\n

his confidence vanished.<\/p>\n

The little girl clutched the wolf patch tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom said you\u2019d protect me,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The biker swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

Because only one person knew what that patch really meant.<\/p>\n

Rose.<\/p>\n

A woman he hadn\u2019t seen in nine years.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, man, relax. That\u2019s my little sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl shook violently against the biker\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo he\u2019s not,\u201d she whispered immediately.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

The biker rose to his full height.<\/p>\n

Massive.<\/p>\n

Still.<\/p>\n

Dangerous in the quietest possible way.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, sweetheart?\u201d he asked the girl without looking away from the young man.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026Lily.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded once.<\/p>\n

Then finally looked back at the man near the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got five seconds to explain why this child is terrified of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The young man glanced toward the front door.<\/p>\n

Calculating.<\/p>\n

Bad idea.<\/p>\n

Three other bikers had already stood up between him and the exit.<\/p>\n

Rain started tapping against the diner windows outside.<\/p>\n

The storm finally arriving.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s confused,\u201d the young man muttered. \u201cHer mom owes people money.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s jaw tightened instantly.<\/p>\n

Because he remembered Rose crying the night he left.<\/p>\n

Remembered her telling him some men wouldn\u2019t stop coming around.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know her mother?\u201d one trucker asked carefully.<\/p>\n

The biker answered without looking away from the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily tugged softly on the biker\u2019s sleeve.<\/p>\n

Her voice cracked when she spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence crashed across the diner.<\/p>\n

The young man snapped immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every biker in the room moved at once.<\/p>\n

Not chaotic.<\/p>\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n

Just sudden enough to make the young man realize he\u2019d made a terrible mistake.<\/p>\n

The biker stepped forward slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cCareful,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

The young man backed up a step.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

Fear finally creeping into his face.<\/p>\n

Because the wolf patch on that vest suddenly meant something very different now.<\/p>\n

The biker crouched slightly beside Lily again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s your mama now?\u201d he asked gently.<\/p>\n

The little girl\u2019s eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe told me to run.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wouldn\u2019t wake up after they hit her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

The biker closed his eyes for one second.<\/p>\n

Only one.<\/p>\n

But when he opened them again\u2014<\/p>\n

something cold had settled behind them.<\/p>\n

Across the diner, thunder rolled low outside.<\/p>\n

The young man took another slow step toward the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit down,\u201d the biker said softly.<\/p>\n

The man froze.<\/p>\n

Because nobody in that diner doubted for a second what would happen if he kept moving.<\/p>\n

Lily looked up at the biker through tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom said your name was Boone,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

His expression broke completely for the first time.<\/p>\n

Because Rose had remembered him.<\/p>\n

After everything.<\/p>\n

After all those years.<\/p>\n

She still trusted the man with the wolf patch to protect her child.<\/p>\n

Boone slowly wrapped one arm around Lily\u2019s shoulders and looked toward the storm-darkened windows.<\/p>\n

Then toward the terrified man trapped inside the diner.<\/p>\n
