The buzzing neon suddenly sounded louder than the man\u2019s breathing.<\/p>\n

Nobody sat anymore.<\/p>\n

Truckers.<\/p>\n

Waitresses.<\/p>\n

Bikers.<\/p>\n

Every person in the diner had gone still after hearing the girl whisper\u2014<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know him.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mason Rourke stayed planted between her and the stranger, broad shoulders blocking the child completely from view.<\/p>\n

The clean-cut man forced another smile.<\/p>\n

Thin now.<\/p>\n

Unsteady.<\/p>\n

\u201cKid\u2019s confused,\u201d he said with a nervous chuckle. \u201cHer mother asked me to pick her up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl grabbed the back of Mason\u2019s flannel tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo she didn\u2019t,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

Mason\u2019s eyes never left the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s her mother\u2019s name?\u201d he asked calmly.<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

Too long.<\/p>\n

The man recovered quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The diner held its breath.<\/p>\n

The stranger glanced around, finally noticing what he\u2019d walked into.<\/p>\n

Dozens of eyes.<\/p>\n

Watching.<\/p>\n

Judging.<\/p>\n

Not one person looking away.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s scared,\u201d he said carefully. \u201cYou\u2019re making this difficult for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason nodded once.<\/p>\n

Then asked the little girl softly\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026Ava.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know this man, Ava?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her answer came instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simple.<\/p>\n

Clear.<\/p>\n

Real.<\/p>\n

That changed everything.<\/p>\n

The stranger\u2019s polished expression cracked slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook,\u201d he muttered, \u201cthis isn\u2019t your business.\u201d<\/p>\n

A trucker near the counter snorted quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeems like it became everybody\u2019s business the second she asked for help.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few heads nodded.<\/p>\n

The waitress locked the front door without being asked.<\/p>\n

Click.<\/em><\/p>\n

The sound echoed through the diner.<\/p>\n

The stranger noticed.<\/p>\n

And for the first time\u2014<\/p>\n

he looked nervous.<\/p>\n

Mason stepped forward slowly.<\/p>\n

Dangerously calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got ID?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

The man didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I look like I need permission from you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Mason replied quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look like a man who followed a terrified child into the wrong diner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence slammed into the room.<\/p>\n

Outside, the gray sedan continued idling beside the window.<\/p>\n

But now people noticed something else\u2014<\/p>\n

another figure sitting inside.<\/p>\n

Watching.<\/p>\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n

One biker near the back muttered under his breath\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t come alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason heard it.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t react.<\/p>\n

But his posture changed slightly.<\/p>\n

Prepared now.<\/p>\n

The stranger saw it too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re getting involved in,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

Mason finally smiled.<\/p>\n

Cold.<\/p>\n

Small.<\/p>\n

\u201cSon,\u201d he said, \u201cyou walked into a room full of people who stopped being afraid a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl peeked out from behind him.<\/p>\n

Tears streaked down her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe took my friend yesterday,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The room froze solid.<\/p>\n

Every biker in that diner looked at the man differently after that.<\/p>\n

Not suspicion anymore.<\/p>\n

Recognition.<\/p>\n

Predator.<\/p>\n

The stranger\u2019s composure vanished completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should\u2019ve stayed quiet,\u201d he snapped at her.<\/p>\n

Big mistake.<\/p>\n

Mason moved one step closer instantly.<\/p>\n

The entire diner seemed to tighten with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cCareful,\u201d Mason said softly.<\/p>\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n

Not angry.<\/p>\n

Which somehow made it terrifying.<\/p>\n

Outside, sirens began wailing faintly in the distance.<\/p>\n

Someone had already called them.<\/p>\n

The stranger heard it too.<\/p>\n

His eyes flicked toward the door.<\/p>\n

Calculating.<\/p>\n

Too late.<\/p>\n

Because now nobody in that diner was going to let him walk out with her.<\/p>\n

Mason reached back slightly without turning.<\/p>\n

Ava grabbed his hand immediately.<\/p>\n

Safe.<\/p>\n

Protected.<\/p>\n

Seen.<\/p>\n

And standing there beneath the fading Oregon sunset\u2014<\/p>\n

with bikers at his back and a frightened child holding onto him\u2014<\/p>\n

Mason Rourke looked less like a man at dinner<\/p>\n
