Cold air tore through Henderson\u2019s Diner as three men stepped inside wearing black county jackets soaked with melting snow.<\/p>\n

Nobody sat back down.<\/p>\n

Every biker in the diner stayed standing, silent and watchful beneath the fluorescent lights.<\/p>\n

Grant Holloway slowly rose from his crouch beside the boy, one massive hand resting lightly on the counter near the scattered coins.<\/p>\n

His eyes never left the child.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow old are you?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cEight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant nodded once, but something behind his expression had already shifted far away.<\/p>\n

Emily Carter.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t heard that name in eleven years.<\/p>\n

Not since the hospital room.<\/p>\n

Not since the night he disappeared before sunrise because he believed leaving was the only way to keep her safe from the violence tied to his life.<\/p>\n

But now her son stood in front of him wearing a hospital wristband and trying to buy food with pocket change.<\/p>\n

The tallest man who entered the diner scanned the room sharply before speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking for a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody answered him.<\/p>\n

The waitress suddenly found the coffee machine very interesting.<\/p>\n

One biker cracked his knuckles slowly.<\/p>\n

Grant looked down at the boy again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, buddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEli.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose men know you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Eli\u2019s frightened eyes darted toward the door.<\/p>\n

Then he nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey came to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s jaw tightened instantly.<\/p>\n

Hospitals.<\/p>\n

Children.<\/p>\n

Wrong kind of men.<\/p>\n

One of the newcomers stepped farther inside. \u201cKid, your mother\u2019s been worried sick. Come on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eli moved closer to Grant instead.<\/p>\n

The diner noticed.<\/p>\n

So did the men.<\/p>\n

Grant finally turned toward them fully.<\/p>\n

Up close, he looked less like a man and more like something built to survive disasters. Gray threaded through his beard, old scars crossed his knuckles, and his faded leather vest carried the worn patch of the Iron Vultures Motorcycle Club.<\/p>\n

A patch people remembered.<\/p>\n

And feared.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hospital security?\u201d Grant asked calmly.<\/p>\n

The man hesitated half a second too long.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant nodded once like that confirmed everything he needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat room\u2019s his mother in?\u201d<\/p>\n

Another pause.<\/p>\n

The bikers around the diner subtly spread out now, boots scraping softly against tile.<\/p>\n

The lead man\u2019s patience faded. \u201cThis isn\u2019t your business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat boy walked in here hungry with a hospital band on his wrist.\u201d He glanced at Eli. \u201cMakes it my business.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tension in the diner thickened instantly.<\/p>\n

One of the men reached beneath his jacket.<\/p>\n

Bad move.<\/p>\n

Every biker in the room straightened at once.<\/p>\n

Chairs scraped backward.<\/p>\n

The waitress ducked behind the counter.<\/p>\n

Grant didn\u2019t raise his voice.<\/p>\n

But when he spoke again, it froze the room solid.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your hand comes back out holding steel,\u201d he said quietly, \u201cyou better be ready to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Heavy.<\/p>\n

Breathing silence.<\/p>\n

Then Eli tugged lightly on Grant\u2019s sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom told me something,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Grant looked down at him.<\/p>\n

Eli reached into his hoodie pocket and pulled out a folded photograph worn soft at the edges.<\/p>\n

Grant took it slowly.<\/p>\n

The picture showed a younger Emily standing beside a black motorcycle, laughing while someone behind the camera wrapped tattooed arms around her waist.<\/p>\n

Grant stared at himself in the photo like he was looking at a dead man.<\/p>\n

Written across the bottom in faded ink were six words that hollowed his chest instantly.<\/p>\n

If he comes back, trust him.<\/p>\n

Grant closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n

Emily wrote that.<\/p>\n

Which meant she expected this day to happen.<\/p>\n

The lead stranger noticed the photograph and suddenly stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake the picture from him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every biker in Henderson\u2019s Diner moved at once.<\/p>\n

Leather creaked.<\/p>\n

Boots thundered.<\/p>\n
