2: The Girl Who Chose the Right Stranger

Rain pounded harder against the diner windows as every eye in the room shifted toward the three men standing beside the booth.

The scar-faced man stared at Travis Boone carefully, trying to decide whether the biker was bluffing—or dangerous enough to become a problem.

Beside Travis, the little girl shook violently beneath her soaked yellow raincoat.

the little girl kept her face pressed against his arm, tiny fingers clutching his flannel sleeve like it was the last safe thing left in the world.

Travis looked down at her once.

Then back at the men.

“Kid falls asleep every time I stop for coffee,” he muttered gruffly. “Ain’t exactly a federal crime.”

The scar-faced man didn’t smile.

“No,” he replied slowly. “But kidnapping is.”

The entire diner went cold.

A waitress near the counter quietly reached beneath the register.

The cook stopped moving altogether.

And Travis—

who normally preferred staying out of everyone’s business—

felt the little girl flinch at that word.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Fear.

“What’s your name, sweetheart?” Travis asked softly without looking away from the men.

A pause.

“…Lucy.”

The scar-faced man answered immediately.

“Her real name’s Emily.”

Lucy grabbed Travis tighter instantly. “Don’t listen to him.”

That reaction settled something deep inside Travis.

Predators always hated when victims spoke first.

One of the other men stepped forward. “We’re taking her home.”

Travis finally leaned back slightly in the booth, studying them beneath the flickering neon reflections crawling across the rain-streaked windows.

“Funny thing,” he said quietly.

The men waited.

“She doesn’t look real excited about going.”

The scar-faced man’s jaw tightened.

“We’ve been searching all night.”

Lucy’s breathing became uneven. “Because I ran.”

Travis looked down slightly. “Why’d you run?”

Tears filled her eyes immediately.

“He hurt my brother.”

Silence crashed across the diner.

One trucker near the front booth muttered, “Jesus Christ…”

The scar-faced man snapped instantly. “She lies.”

Wrong move.

Too fast.

Too angry.

Travis noticed everything.

So did the rest of the diner.

Outside—

another pair of headlights rolled slowly into the rain-soaked parking lot.

Then another.

Too many vehicles for a missing-child search.

Travis’s eyes shifted briefly toward the window.

Black SUVs.

No markings.

No police.

That bothered him more than the men themselves.

“What exactly do you boys do?” he asked calmly.

No answer.

Lucy whispered against his sleeve, “They work for Mr. Vale.”

The scar-faced man lunged forward slightly. “Shut up.”

In one smooth movement, Travis stood.

Fast enough to make dishes rattle.

The booth suddenly looked too small for him.

Tall.

Broad.

Scarred hands hanging loose at his sides.

The entire diner instinctively moved backward.

The scar-faced man stopped walking immediately.

Travis’s voice stayed calm.

“Bad idea.”

Rain hammered the roof harder as neon light flickered across the stunned silence inside the diner.

Lucy stared up at Travis like she couldn’t believe someone had finally stood between her and the men chasing her.

Then the front diner windows flashed white from headlights outside.

More doors opening.

More men stepping into the storm.

The scar-faced man noticed Travis counting them in the reflection.

“You really want trouble over some runaway kid?”

Travis looked down briefly at Lucy’s bruised wrist peeking from beneath the yellow raincoat.

Then back at him.

“A runaway usually runs from something.”

Nobody spoke after that.

Because everyone inside the diner understood exactly what he meant.

Lucy slowly reached into her pocket then, pulling out a tiny silver flash drive attached to a cartoon keychain.

The moment the scar-faced man saw it—

his expression changed completely.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Give me that,” he said sharply.

Lucy shook her head and backed closer to Travis.

“My mom said if they found us…” Her voice cracked. “…to give this to someone who looked dangerous enough to help.”

A long silence followed.

Then Travis gave a slow glance toward the black SUVs surrounding the diner outside.

Engines idled beneath the Nevada storm.

Men approaching.

Too late to walk away now.

Travis exhaled once and slipped the flash drive into his jacket pocket.

Then he looked at the scar-faced man with cold, steady eyes.

“Well,” he said quietly.

“Looks like your night just got
