Paramedics were called immediately.
\nBlankets appeared from storage closets.
\nOne officer sprinted toward the break room to heat bottles of water.<\/p>\n
Through it all, the little girl stood barefoot near the front desk, soaked from the rain and shivering from cold exhaustion.<\/p>\n
Deputy Hollis carefully lifted the newborn from the grocery bag while another officer wrapped the tiny baby in a thick thermal blanket.<\/p>\n
The infant barely cried.<\/p>\n
Too weak.
\nToo cold.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome on, little guy,\u201d the paramedic whispered gently. \u201cStay with us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deputy Hollis looked back toward the little girl.<\/p>\n
She couldn\u2019t have been older than eight.<\/p>\n
Mud covered her feet.
\nRainwater dripped from her tangled hair.

Emily sniffled and hugged herself tightly. \u201cThis morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
