The sound of chairs scraping across the floor hit harder than shouting ever could.<\/p>\n
Fifteen bikers stood at once.<\/p>\n
Not confused.<\/p>\n
Not surprised.<\/p>\n
Ready.<\/p>\n
The little boy flinched violently at the sudden movement, his small hands tightening around the edge of the booth as panic flashed across his face.<\/p>\n
The biker with the scarred hand noticed immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s alright,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n
But his eyes had already changed.<\/p>\n
Rachel.<\/p>\n
The name moved through the diner like a shockwave no one needed explained.<\/p>\n
One of the older riders near the counter muttered a curse beneath his breath. Another reached automatically for the phone clipped to his vest.<\/p>\n
The diner\u2019s tired neon hum suddenly felt too loud.<\/p>\n
The boy looked from face to face, frightened now by what his answer had caused.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid\u2026 did I say something bad?\u201d<\/p>\n
The biker across from him leaned forward slowly.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he answered.<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou said something dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n
Outside, engines began turning over one by one in the parking lot.<\/p>\n
Deep.<\/p>\n
Heavy.<\/p>\n
Controlled.<\/p>\n
The little boy swallowed hard as thunder rolled through the diner windows\u2014not from the sky, but from motorcycles waking up outside.<\/p>\n
The biker finally removed his hand from the seven dollars still sitting on the table.<\/p>\n
Crumpled bills.<\/p>\n
Two quarters.<\/p>\n
Everything the kid had.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere\u2019s your mama now?\u201d he asked carefully.<\/p>\n
The boy\u2019s eyes dropped immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey took her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence crushed the room.<\/p>\n
One biker stopped halfway to the door. Another slowly closed his eyes like he already feared the answer coming next.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho took her?\u201d someone asked from behind.<\/p>\n
The boy shook his head quickly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI dunno their names.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then quieter:<\/p>\n
\u201cBut they had snakes on their jackets.\u201d<\/p>\n
The reaction was instant.<\/p>\n
Several bikers turned sharply toward each other.<\/p>\n
One whispered, \u201cNo damn way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another stepped toward the windows, jaw tightening hard.<\/p>\n
Because everybody in that diner knew exactly who wore snakes.<\/p>\n
And nobody wearing those colors left witnesses behind.<\/p>\n
The biker at the booth crouched lower until he was eye level with the child.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen did this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLast night.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n
The boy hesitated.<\/p>\n
Fear climbed back into his face.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey told me if I talked\u2026\u201d His voice cracked. \u201cThey\u2019d come back.\u201d<\/p>\n
The biker\u2019s expression hardened instantly.<\/p>\n
He pulled a small silver lighter from his vest pocket and flicked it open once.<\/p>\n
Inside the lid was a faded photograph.<\/p>\n
The boy stared at it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s my mama.\u201d<\/p>\n
The entire diner went still again.<\/p>\n
The biker closed the lighter slowly.<\/p>\n
Every rider in the room watched him now.<\/p>\n
Because the woman smiling in that photo wasn\u2019t just Rachel.<\/p>\n
She was family.<\/p>\n
Not blood.<\/p>\n
Worse.<\/p>\n
Club family.<\/p>\n
And somebody had just taken her.<\/p>\n
Outside, engines roared louder as more motorcycles rolled into the lot from the highway, dust spiraling beneath the fading evening light.<\/p>\n
The biker finally stood.<\/p>\n
His voice came low.<\/p>\n
Deadly calm.<\/p>\n
\u201cLock the diner down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instant movement followed.<\/p>\n
Doors bolted.<\/p>\n
Curtains shut.<\/p>\n
Lights dimmed.<\/p>\n
The little boy stared around in fear as the entire diner transformed into something harder and far more dangerous than a roadside stop off the highway.<\/p>\n
The biker looked back down at him one last time.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, kid?\u201d<\/p>\n
The boy answered softly.<\/p>\n
The biker nodded once.<\/p>\n
Then placed the seven dollars carefully back into the boy\u2019s trembling hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep it,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n
The boy looked confused. \u201cBut\u2026 I was trying to pay you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The biker\u2019s eyes lifted toward the growing line of motorcycles outside.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n
