to carry the toddler back toward the door.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1329\">The man moved before he could.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1348\">Not aggressively.<\/p>\n<p bakery.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1506\">The boy looked cornered now, scanning the room for exits that suddenly felt too far away.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1565\">The man the pastry counter covered her mouth in shock as realization spread across the staff one face at a time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"1972\">The man knelt slowly onto the marble first time there was no authority left in his face.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2179\" data-end=\"2190\">Only grief.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2192\" data-end=\"2239\">\u201cBecause,\u201d he said carefully, bakery changed instantly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3100\">The suited man stood in one sharp movement, all emotion collapsing back beneath control.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3102\" data-end=\"3131\">\u201cLock the doors,\u201d he ordered.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3133\" data-end=\"3160\">This time nobody hesitated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3162\" data-end=\"3193\">Metal locks slammed into place.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3239\">Employees rushed to pull down window shades.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3241\" data-end=\"3266\">Outside, the SUV stopped.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3268\" data-end=\"3297\">The boy backed away in panic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3299\" data-end=\"3328\">\u201cThey can\u2019t know she\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3330\" data-end=\"3364\">The man looked down at Lina again.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3366\" data-end=\"3382\">At the bracelet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3384\" data-end=\"3424\">At the child he mourned for three years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3426\" data-end=\"3476\">Then toward the dark SUV waiting beyond the glass.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3478\" data-end=\"3526\">His voice became cold enough to freeze the room.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3528\" data-end=\"3546\">\u201cThey already do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3548\" data-end=\"3624\">The toddler stirred weakly against the boy\u2019s shoulder, eyes barely open now.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3626\" data-end=\"3633\">Hungry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3635\" data-end=\"3645\">Exhausted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3647\" data-end=\"3680\">Safe for only a few more seconds.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3682\" data-end=\"3751\">The man loosened his tie slowly and looked toward the bakery kitchen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3753\" data-end=\"3788\">Then toward the terrified children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3790\" data-end=\"3826\">And finally back to the SUV outside.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3828\" data-end=\"3886\">\u201cThey came for my daughter once already,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3888\" data-end=\"3896\">A pause.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3898\" data-end=\"3938\">Then something harder entered his voice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3940\" data-end=\"3973\"
