The diner door didn’t just swing open.

It hesitated—as if the wind outside had second thoughts about letting what was coming inside.

A few bikers near the motorcycles turned first.

Then the rest followed.

Not quickly.

Not alarmed.

Recognizing something before it fully arrived.

Mason didn’t look back right away. His attention stayed on Willa, on the five-dollar bill now folded carefully in his hand like it weighed more than it should.

“You keep this,” he said quietly.

Willa shook her head immediately. “No. It’s for help.”

Her voice cracked on the last word, like she’d practiced it too many times alone.

Mason exhaled slowly.

And then he did something none of the bikers expected.

He crouched.

Right there in the freezing wind, in front of everyone.

At her level.

The parking lot went still in a way that had nothing to do with weather.

“You don’t pay for help,” he said. “You don’t ever pay for it.”

Willa blinked at him, confused.

“Then why does no one come when we need it?” she asked.

That question landed harder than the cold.

Mason didn’t answer immediately.

Because there wasn’t a clean answer in it.

Behind him, the diner door opened fully now.

A man stepped out.

Not a biker.

Not dressed for the cold.

Clean coat. Controlled posture. The kind of calm that didn’t belong in Ash Hollow.

He looked past Mason.

Directly at Willa.

And smiled like he already knew her.

“There you are,” the man said softly.

The bikers shifted instantly.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

Controlled focus.

Mason straightened slowly.

The five-dollar bill tightened in his hand without him noticing.

Willa froze.

Her breath caught.

“That’s him,” she whispered.

Not loud enough for most to hear.

But Mason heard it.

Everything changed in him at once.

The man’s smile didn’t move.

“Your mother sent me,” he said.

Willa shook her head violently.

“No,” she said quickly. “She said don’t—”

Mason stepped half in front of her without thinking.

The movement was small.

Final.

The wind dropped slightly, as if even it was listening now.

The man’s eyes flicked to Mason for the first time.

“Oh,” he said.

Like he was mildly inconvenienced.

“I didn’t expect company.”

One of the bikers near the motorcycles muttered, “Crowe…”

Mason didn’t look away.

“Step back,” he said calmly.

The man sighed.

Not afraid.

Annoyed.

“I’m not here for you,” he replied.

Then his gaze returned to Willa.

“I’m here to take what she’s carrying.”

Willa instinctively grabbed Mason’s jacket.

The five-dollar bill crumpled tighter in Mason’s fist.

And for the first time since she walked into the cold—

Mason understood the truth.

The money wasn’t payment.

It was bait.

He leaned slightly toward Willa, voice low enough only she could hear.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

She nodded instantly.

No hesitation now.

Behind them, engines that had been idling began to turn off one by one.

Not retreat.

Preparation.

Mason looked up at the man again.

His voice changed.

Still quiet.

But no longer uncertain.

“You’re in the wrong town,” he said.

The man’s smile faded just a fraction.

And in that fraction—

Ash Hollow stopped being a place.

And became a line.

The diner door didn’t just swing open.
