Come on\u2014we\u2019ve been looking everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She doesn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t even breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Travis notices.<\/p>\n<p>And that tells him everything.<\/p>\n<p>He slowly sets his coffee down. \u201cKid doesn\u2019t seem too excited to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s smile fades slightly. \u201cFamily issue. Doesn\u2019t concern you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis leans back in the booth, one arm still around the girl\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The diner staff pretend to clean tables, but everyone is watching.<\/p>\n<p>Because something about Travis Boone changes when he gets quiet.<\/p>\n<p>One of the men steps forward. \u201cYou don\u2019t know who you\u2019re talking to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis finally stands.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>The booth creaks behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Tall. Scarred. Unshaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you,\u201d he says calmly, \u201cpicked the wrong booth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room freezes.<\/p>\n<p>The girl grips the back of his vest tightly, hiding behind him now.<\/p>\n<p>Thunder shakes the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the oldest trucker in the diner stands up too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProblem here?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n<p>Another man rises near the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the three strangers realize something:<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in the diner is on their side.<\/p>\n<p>The lead man clenches his jaw. \u201cThat girl belongs with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis looks down slightly at the terrified child behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he says quietly.<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>Cold enough to stop the room.<\/p>\n<p>The man takes another step\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and Travis moves instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Not violent.<\/p>\n<p>Not loud.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for everyone to understand how fast things could turn.<\/p>\n<p>The strangers stop.<\/p>\n<p>Because now they see it clearly:<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just some biker.<\/p>\n<p>This is a man who\u2019s spent his whole life around danger\u2026<\/p>\n<p>and isn\u2019t scared of theirs.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl finally whispers, barely audible\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey hurt my mom\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travis hears it.<\/p>\n<p>And something in his face hardens completely.<\/p>\n<p>The men notice too.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when fear finally touches them.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of the diner.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Because of him.<\/p>\n<p>Travis reaches for his jacket slowly and pulls out his wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Inside is an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A little girl.<\/p>\n<p>About the same age.<\/p>\n<p>For one brief second, pain flashes across his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Gone just as fast.<\/p>\n<p>He puts the wallet away and looks at the child behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re safe,\u201d he says quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looks back at the men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you boys should leave before this gets worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, lightning tears across the Nevada sky.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, nobody moves.<\/p>\n<p>Because everyone understands the same thing now\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Travis Boone didn\u2019t just pretend to be her father.<\/p>\n<p>The second she asked for help\u2026<\/p>\n<p>he became one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The three men stop at the booth.
