The ninety-three dollars were gone now\u2014no longer in her hands.<\/p>\n<p>Spent.<\/p>\n<p>Not on money\u2014<\/p>\n<p>but on something far more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d she asked softly.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Really looked this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou eat,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you stay close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t an answer.<\/p>\n<p>But it was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the first engine arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Then more.<\/p>\n<p>Low. Heavy. Building.<\/p>\n<p>Not random.<\/p>\n<p>Not scattered.<\/p>\n<p>Called.<\/p>\n<p>The biker stepped toward the window, watching as riders began to fill the empty lot. Dust lifted again, swirling around boots and steel as men dismounted one by one.<\/p>\n<p>No greetings.<\/p>\n<p>No wasted motion.<\/p>\n<p>They already knew.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, someone muttered, \u201cHow many is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biker didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because he was counting something else.<\/p>\n<p>Time.<\/p>\n<p>The door opened.<\/p>\n<p>One of the riders stepped in, pulling off his helmet. \u201cYou sure it\u2019s him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biker nodded once. \u201cShe said the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>The man exhaled sharply. \u201cWe buried that ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d the biker replied. \u201cLooks like it dug itself out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room tightened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he take?\u201d another asked.<\/p>\n<p>The biker\u2019s eyes shifted back to the girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says they took her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Because men like that didn\u2019t take people without reason.<\/p>\n<p>The rider leaned closer. \u201cSo what are we dealing with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biker\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething that doesn\u2019t want to be found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl spoke again, barely above a whisper. \u201cHe said\u2026 if anyone came looking\u2026 they\u2019d disappear too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a small, humorless smile crossed the biker\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The rider frowned. \u201cGood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biker stepped toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeans he knows we\u2019re coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, engines roared louder now\u2014dozens filling the air, turning the empty desert into something alive, something moving.<\/p>\n<p>The girl watched from inside, eyes wide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>He paused at the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t turn around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to bring her back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A beat.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he\u2019s still breathing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped out into the sun, into the rising thunder of engines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026he won\u2019t be for long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hunt had started.<\/p>\n<p>And this time\u2014<\/p>\n<p>it wasn\u2019t just about finding someone.<\/p>\n<p>It was about finishing something<\/p>\n<p>that should\u2019ve ended a long time ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The diner didn\u2019t return to normal.
