He was already hurt.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow bad?\u201d<br \/>\nShe didn\u2019t soften it. \u201cBad enough to know he was out of time.\u201d<br \/>\nThe room shifted again\u2014anger now, not confusion.<br \/>\n\u201cWho did it?\u201d Rick snapped.<br \/>\nEvelyn didn\u2019t answer right away.<br \/>\nInstead\u2014<br \/>\nshe held up the rusted key.<br \/>\nThe metal caught the neon light just enough to show its shape.<br \/>\nOld.<br \/>\nIndustrial.<br \/>\nRecognizable.<br \/>\nBoone\u2019s expression changed instantly.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d he asked, voice tighter now.<br \/>\n\u201cHe gave it to me,\u201d she said. \u201cTold me it opens something you\u2019ve been looking for.\u201d<br \/>\nThat hit deeper than anything else.<br \/>\nBecause there was only one thing like that.<br \/>\nBoone took a step closer.<br \/>\n\u201cThat key shouldn\u2019t exist anymore.\u201d<br \/>\nEvelyn\u2019s voice stayed calm. \u201cHe said you\u2019d say that.\u201d<br \/>\nBoone exhaled slowly, looking back at the letter in his hand.<br \/>\nThen he read aloud\u2014<br \/>\njust one line:<br \/>\n\u201cIf you\u2019re reading this, it means I didn\u2019t make it. Don\u2019t come looking for me\u2026 come looking for what they were hiding.\u201d<br \/>\nThe room went still again.<br \/>\nNot confusion this time.<br \/>\nUnderstanding.<br \/>\nRick\u2019s voice dropped. \u201cHiding what?\u201d<br \/>\nBoone folded the letter once, tight.<br \/>\nThen looked at Evelyn.<br \/>\n\u201cDid he say who \u2018they\u2019 are?\u201d<br \/>\nShe shook her head. \u201cNo. But he said you already knew.\u201d<br \/>\nThat was the worst part.<br \/>\nBecause Boone did.<br \/>\nHe just didn\u2019t want to.<br \/>\nA low rumble built outside.<br \/>\nEngines.<br \/>\nNot theirs.<br \/>\nBoone\u2019s eyes flicked toward the door.<br \/>\nThen back to Evelyn.<br \/>\n\u201cHow long after he gave you this did you leave?\u201d he asked.<br \/>\n\u201cAn hour,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd how long did it take you to get here?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTwo days.\u201d<br \/>\nBoone nodded slowly.<br \/>\n\u201cThen they\u2019re late,\u201d Rick muttered.<br \/>\nBoone didn\u2019t agree.<br \/>\nHe stepped past Evelyn, heading toward the door.<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cThey\u2019re right on time.\u201d<br \/>\nOutside, headlights cut through the dark.<br \/>\nMultiple vehicles.<br \/>\nClosing in.<br \/>\nInside, the room shifted\u2014chairs pushed back, hands lowering toward weapons without being told.<br \/>\nEvelyn didn\u2019t move.<br \/>\nDidn\u2019t flinch.<br \/>\nBecause whatever Dutch had left behind\u2014<br \/>\nhad just caught up with her.<br \/>\nAnd now\u2014<br \/>\nit was everyone\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No one in the room moved.
