His expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n

Not shock.<\/p>\n

Recognition.<\/p>\n

The kind that settles hard behind the eyes before anyone else understands why.<\/p>\n

Ethan noticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrick,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

But Brick didn\u2019t answer right away.<\/p>\n

He slowly pulled the backpack closer, careful now\u2014far more careful than a second ago.<\/p>\n

The girl saw the movement and stiffened immediately.<\/p>\n

Her small hands gripped the edge of the booth.<\/p>\n

Brick\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s expression hardened instantly, though he kept his voice steady for the girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her breathing grew uneven.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t steal it,\u201d she said quickly.<\/p>\n

No one accused her.<\/p>\n

That somehow made it worse.<\/p>\n

Ethan glanced at Brick once.<\/p>\n

Brick gave the smallest shake of his head.<\/p>\n

Not now.<\/p>\n

Not in front of her.<\/p>\n

The girl curled inward slightly in the booth, eyes darting toward the windows like she expected headlights to appear any second.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe made me carry it,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

Ethan stayed still.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her answer came so quietly it almost disappeared beneath the hum of the diner lights.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word sat wrong in the air.<\/p>\n

Because nothing about the fear in her face sounded like she meant safety when she said it.<\/p>\n

Brick slowly pulled one photograph free from the bag.<\/p>\n

The moment he saw it, he went completely still.<\/p>\n

Ethan noticed immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brick slid the photo across the table without speaking.<\/p>\n

Ethan picked it up.<\/p>\n

And the room changed.<\/p>\n

The picture showed a group of children standing beside a white cargo van.<\/p>\n

Some smiling.<\/p>\n

Some clearly not understanding why the picture was being taken at all.<\/p>\n

In the corner of the photo\u2014<\/p>\n

a date.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow\u2019s date.<\/p>\n

Ethan looked back at the girl slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere was this taken?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook her head quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d she said. \u201cHe just said we had to keep driving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s fingers tightened slightly around the photo.<\/p>\n

Then he noticed something else.<\/p>\n

Every child in the picture wore the same colored wristband.<\/p>\n

Except her.<\/p>\n

His eyes dropped to her sleeve.<\/p>\n

She noticed too late.<\/p>\n

A faded mark circled her wrist where something had recently been removed.<\/p>\n

The diner\u2019s silence turned heavier.<\/p>\n

Darker.<\/p>\n

Brick looked toward the windows.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

But Ethan was already moving.<\/p>\n

Not fast.<\/p>\n

Certain.<\/p>\n

He slid the photo back into the bag carefully and crouched beside the booth until he was level with the girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

She answered softly.<\/p>\n

Ethan nodded once.<\/p>\n

Then he said something that changed the feeling of the room completely:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou carried this here for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl\u2019s eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know where else to go,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n

Ethan looked toward the other bikers.<\/p>\n

Toward Brick.<\/p>\n

Toward the locked diner door.<\/p>\n

Then back to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came to the right place,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

Outside, headlights rolled past slowly on the highway.<\/p>\n

Too slowly.<\/p>\n

No one in the diner looked away from the windows after that.<\/p>\n

Because now the backpack wasn\u2019t just luggage.<\/p>\n

It was evidence.<\/p>\n
