The wind didn’t ease.

It just kept cutting through Ash Hollow like it had unfinished business.

Mason Crowe stayed lowered for a moment longer than anyone expected.

Not because he was thinking about the money.

Because he wasn’t.

Willa held the crumpled bill between both hands now, arms starting to shake from the cold more than fear.

“I can pay,” she repeated softly, like she needed him to believe it more than he did.

Mason finally looked up at her face.

Really looked.

Not at the bill.

Not at the crowd behind her.

Just her.

Then he shook his head once.

“No,” he said.

Willa blinked, confused. “But… I have it.”

“I know,” Mason replied.

A pause.

The kind that didn’t belong in a parking lot full of idling engines and frozen steel.

He straightened slowly, leather creaking under frost.

Then he reached out—but not for the money.

For her hands.

He gently folded her fingers back around the bill.

Kept it there.

Like returning something that was never meant to leave her grip in the first place.

“I’m not taking that,” he said quietly.

Willa’s voice wavered. “Why not?”

Mason glanced past her for a moment—toward the diner lights, toward the broken line of cold motorcycles, toward a world that didn’t feel built for answers like this.

Then back to her.

“Because you shouldn’t have had to offer it,” he said.

The words landed heavier than the wind.

Behind him, one of the bikers shifted slightly.

Another exhaled like they were remembering something they didn’t talk about anymore.

Willa tightened her grip anyway.

“So you won’t help?” she asked, smaller now.

That question did something different.

It didn’t accuse.

It trusted.

Mason closed his eyes for a second.

When he opened them, something had changed.

Not his posture.

Not his face.

Something deeper.

“Yeah,” he said finally.

Willa didn’t move.

He added, softer:

“But not because you paid.”

He stood fully now, turning slightly toward his bike.

Then paused.

Looked back at her again.

“Tell me your mom’s name,” he said.

Willa did.

And somewhere behind Mason, a biker muttered, “You know her?”

Mason didn’t answer right away.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

It was buried under years.

Under silence.

Under things people don’t say out loud anymore.

Finally, he spoke.

“I did,” he said.

That changed the air instantly.

The bikers behind him straightened.

Not in surprise.

In recognition of something they’d all feared resurfacing.

Willa stepped forward a half-step. “Is she okay?”

Mason didn’t lie.

But he didn’t answer fully either.

Not yet.

Instead, he knelt down again so he was level with her.

The cold didn’t matter to him.

“Listen to me,” he said gently. “You’re not going to stand here alone anymore. Understand?”

Willa nodded slowly.

Behind them, engines began to turn over—not loud yet, not aggressive.

Just waking.

One by one.

Mason stood again.

And this time, when he turned toward the bikes, his voice carried differently.

Not louder.

Not harsher.

Decided.

“Get ready,” he said.

No one asked why.

No one needed to.

Because something in Ash Hollow had just shifted from a child asking for help…

to a name that none of them had forgotten how to fear.

And Mason Crowe—who didn’t take the five dollars—

had just taken responsibility for everything that came with it.
