The sheriff\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Behind him, the men shifted.<\/p>\n

Not casually.<\/p>\n

Positioning.<\/p>\n

The line was clear now.<\/p>\n

Jake looked over his shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet him inside,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

Two bikers moved immediately, guiding the boy back\u2014gentle, but fast.<\/p>\n

The sheriff took a step forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s evidence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Jake didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo is the truth,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

A beat.<\/p>\n

Silence stretched.<\/p>\n

The wind kicked up dust across the lot.<\/p>\n

Jake almost smiled.<\/p>\n
