The old man held her gently, like he was afraid she might vanish if he held too tight.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom said you wouldn\u2019t remember me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Her small hands stayed on his face.<\/p>\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n

Hoping.<\/p>\n

The teacher stepped closer, cautious now.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart\u2026 are you sure\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLila,\u201d the man whispered.<\/p>\n

The word came out broken.<\/p>\n

But certain.<\/p>\n

The girl\u2019s eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou remember!\u201d she breathed.<\/p>\n

His fingers trembled as they brushed her hair back.<\/p>\n

Not because he was unsure\u2014<\/p>\n

but because something inside him was unlocking all at once.<\/p>\n

Images. Voices. Laughter he hadn\u2019t heard in years.<\/p>\n

A smaller version of her.<\/p>\n

Running through a garden.<\/p>\n

Calling that same name.<\/p>\n

\u201cLila\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He said it again, stronger this time.<\/p>\n

The teacher stopped speaking.<\/p>\n

Because this wasn\u2019t confusion.<\/p>\n

This was recognition finding its way back.<\/p>\n

The old man looked around like the world had suddenly become unfamiliar.<\/p>\n

Then back at her\u2014<\/p>\n

the one thing that wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mother\u2026\u201d he said slowly. \u201cShe used to bring you here. You\u2019d run past me every time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lila nodded quickly, tears slipping down her cheeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said you forgot after you got sick,\u201d she whispered. \u201cBut she said if I came\u2026 maybe you\u2019d remember.\u201d<\/p>\n

He swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

Because forgetting hadn\u2019t felt like losing something.<\/p>\n

It had felt like pieces of him quietly disappearing without warning.<\/p>\n

Until now.<\/p>\n

He pulled her closer again.<\/p>\n

This time, not hesitating.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n

She shook her head against his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re here now.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was enough for her.<\/p>\n

The teacher stepped back, giving them space she now understood they needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you\u2026 know where her parents are?\u201d she asked gently.<\/p>\n

Lila pulled back, still holding his hand tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2019s at work,\u201d she said. \u201cShe told me to wait\u2026 but I didn\u2019t want to wait anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man nodded slowly.<\/p>\n

He understood that feeling now.<\/p>\n

Not wanting to wait.<\/p>\n

Not wanting to lose something again.<\/p>\n

He looked down at their joined hands.<\/p>\n

Then at the gate.<\/p>\n

Then back at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s not wait anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A simple sentence.<\/p>\n

But full of something he hadn\u2019t felt in a long time\u2014<\/p>\n

certainty.<\/p>\n

Lila smiled through her tears.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since the gates had opened\u2014<\/p>\n

the old man didn\u2019t look like someone sitting alone.<\/p>\n

He looked like someone who had finally been found.<\/p>\n

Because some memories don\u2019t come back all at once.<\/p>\n
