The engines didn\u2019t idle.<\/p>\n

They stopped<\/em>.<\/p>\n

All at once.<\/p>\n

Outside, the sudden silence hit harder than the noise ever could.<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s hand closed around the key, the scratched letters biting into his palm like they meant to stay there.<\/p>\n

HIS.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t seen that mark in years.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n

Some things didn\u2019t fade.<\/p>\n

Under the table, the girl pressed closer, her breathing quick, uneven.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey came back,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His voice was low again\u2014but not calm anymore.<\/p>\n

Focused.<\/p>\n

Sharp.<\/p>\n

He leaned just enough to look through the cracked edge of the window.<\/p>\n

Three vehicles.<\/p>\n

Black.<\/p>\n

Doors opening slow.<\/p>\n

Not rushing.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n

They thought they already had control.<\/p>\n

The biker exhaled once, steadying something inside himself.<\/p>\n

Then he looked back at the girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen to me,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cNo matter what happens, you stay right here. Don\u2019t move unless I tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded fast.<\/p>\n

Too fast.<\/p>\n

But she understood.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

Boots hit gravel outside.<\/p>\n

Heavy.<\/p>\n

Measured.<\/p>\n

The diner hadn\u2019t reacted yet.<\/p>\n

A couple of people looked up.<\/p>\n

Confused.<\/p>\n

Not afraid.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

The door opened.<\/p>\n

No bell.<\/p>\n

Just the creak of hinges.<\/p>\n

A man stepped inside.<\/p>\n

Clean.<\/p>\n

Calm.<\/p>\n

Wrong.<\/p>\n

His eyes swept the room once\u2014slow, deliberate\u2014before settling on the booth.<\/p>\n

On the biker.<\/p>\n

Recognition sparked instantly.<\/p>\n

A faint smile followed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t expect to see you here,\u201d the man said.<\/p>\n

The biker didn\u2019t stand.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he replied. \u201cFunny how that works.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s gaze dropped slightly.<\/p>\n

To the table.<\/p>\n

To the key.<\/p>\n

The smile faded just a fraction.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always did have a habit of picking up things that don\u2019t belong to you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The biker flipped the key once in his fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A beat.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe walked in.\u201d<\/p>\n

That landed.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s eyes narrowed\u2014just enough to show it mattered.<\/p>\n

Behind him, two more stepped inside.<\/p>\n

Positioning.<\/p>\n

Blocking.<\/p>\n

The room started to feel it now.<\/p>\n

Conversations died.<\/p>\n

Chairs stopped moving.<\/p>\n

Something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n

The biker slowly stood.<\/p>\n

Not aggressive.<\/p>\n

Not rushed.<\/p>\n

Just enough to put himself between the man and the booth.<\/p>\n

Between the man\u2014<\/p>\n

And the girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a long way from where you usually hide,\u201d the biker said.<\/p>\n

The man tilted his head slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019re closer than you should be,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

Silence stretched.<\/p>\n

Tight.<\/p>\n

Controlled.<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s grip tightened around the key again.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaven\u2019t seen that mark in a while,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s expression didn\u2019t change.<\/p>\n

But something behind it did.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome things aren\u2019t meant to be found,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The biker nodded once.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s usually when I go looking.\u201d<\/p>\n

A faint sound came from behind him\u2014the girl shifting slightly, trying to stay quiet.<\/p>\n

The man heard it.<\/p>\n

Of course he did.<\/p>\n

His eyes flicked toward the booth.<\/p>\n

Just for a second.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

The biker stepped forward.<\/p>\n

One step.<\/p>\n

Blocking completely now.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n

Final.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s smile returned\u2014but thinner this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get to decide that,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

The biker didn\u2019t blink.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside\u2014<\/p>\n

Another engine.<\/p>\n

Different.<\/p>\n

Closer.<\/p>\n

The man heard it.<\/p>\n

So did everyone else.<\/p>\n

His head turned slightly toward the door.<\/p>\n

Then back.<\/p>\n

Calculating.<\/p>\n

Because this wasn\u2019t part of his control anymore.<\/p>\n

The biker saw it.<\/p>\n

The shift.<\/p>\n

The crack.<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

Then, colder\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the wrong girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

The air snapped tight.<\/p>\n

The two men behind the first shifted their stance.<\/p>\n

Ready.<\/p>\n

But not moving yet.<\/p>\n

Because something had changed.<\/p>\n

Outside, more engines rolled in.<\/p>\n

Not fast.<\/p>\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n

Just enough to be heard.<\/p>\n

The kind of sound that meant this wasn\u2019t going to stay contained.<\/p>\n

The man in front exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis doesn\u2019t end here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The biker nodded once.<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s eyes stayed locked on the man.<\/p>\n

Unblinking.<\/p>\n

Unmoving.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t about a key.<\/p>\n

Or a room.<\/p>\n

Or even the past.<\/p>\n

This was about what happened next.<\/p>\n
