The name echoed louder now.<\/p>\n

His hands trembled slightly on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah,\u201d he repeated under his breath.<\/p>\n

The boy nodded, eyes searching his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said you\u2019d be here\u2026 that you always come to this booth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earl let out a slow breath.<\/p>\n

Of course she remembered that.<\/p>\n

Of course she would.<\/p>\n

Some habits don\u2019t change.<\/p>\n

Even when everything else does.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow\u2026 how is she?\u201d he asked, though he already knew the answer.<\/p>\n

The boy looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s really sick,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cThe doctors said\u2026 she doesn\u2019t have much time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words settled heavy between them.<\/p>\n

Earl closed his eyes for a second.<\/p>\n

Because this wasn\u2019t just a message.<\/p>\n

It was a reckoning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought she hated me,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

The boy shook his head quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cShe just\u2026 stopped talking about you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hurt more than anger ever could.<\/p>\n

Earl looked at him again.<\/p>\n

Really looked this time.<\/p>\n

The same eyes.<\/p>\n

The same quiet strength.<\/p>\n

A reflection of someone he had once loved\u2014and walked away from.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cBen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earl nodded slowly.<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

Earl\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Because that meant time was already running out.<\/p>\n

He looked at the photo again.<\/p>\n

At the man he used to be.<\/p>\n

At the life he chose not to live.<\/p>\n

Then back at the boy standing in front of him\u2014<\/p>\n

the piece of that life that had found its way back anyway.<\/p>\n

Earl pushed his plate aside.<\/p>\n

Stood up.<\/p>\n

Slowly, but without hesitation this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is she?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Ben\u2019s eyes widened slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cCity hospital,\u201d he said quickly.<\/p>\n

Earl grabbed his coat from the seat.<\/p>\n

For a second, he just stood there.<\/p>\n

Like he was at the edge of something he had avoided for years.<\/p>\n

Then he looked at Ben.<\/p>\n

And his voice softened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have had to come find me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A beat.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m glad you did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben didn\u2019t smile.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

But something in his shoulders eased.<\/p>\n

Earl reached for the photo and folded it carefully, placing it in his pocket.<\/p>\n

Not to hide it.<\/p>\n

To carry it.<\/p>\n

He stepped toward the door, then paused.<\/p>\n

Looking back at booth seven\u2014<\/p>\n

the place he had been sitting still for years.<\/p>\n

Then he opened the door.<\/p>\n

The neon flickered behind him.<\/p>\n

The cold air rushed in.<\/p>\n
