He didn’t sit down right away.

The phone stayed in his hand a second longer than necessary, like the weight of that call hadn’t settled yet—it was still moving, still spreading.

Inside the diner, the girl watched him without speaking.

She hadn’t touched the food.

Hadn’t looked away.

“Say it again,” a voice crackled faintly from the phone.

He stepped toward the window, eyes scanning the empty stretch of highway beyond the glass.

Then he said the name.

Clear.

Slow.

Final.

Silence followed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“We thought he was gone,” the voice replied.

“So did I,” the biker said.

A pause.

Then the shift.

“Alright… then we don’t wait.”

The line went dead.

No questions.

No hesitation.

Just movement starting somewhere far beyond that desert.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket and turned.

The girl was still there—small, still, holding onto the edge of the booth like it anchored her to something real.

“Did I do something wrong?” she asked quietly.

He shook his head once.

“No,” he said.

His voice was steady—but colder now, sharpened by something deeper.

“You did exactly what you needed to.”

She nodded, though she didn’t fully understand.

To her, it was just a name.

To him—

It was unfinished business.

He sat down across from her, leaning forward slightly.

“How long were you alone?” he asked.

She thought about it.

“…two nights,” she said. “Maybe three.”

Too long.

He exhaled slowly, eyes dropping for a moment before lifting again.

“You shouldn’t have had to wait that long,” he said.

She didn’t respond.

Because there wasn’t anything to say to that.

Outside—

A sound.

Faint.

But real.

An engine.

Then another.

The girl turned her head slightly, eyes narrowing toward the window.

“They’re coming?” she asked.

He nodded once.

“They heard me.”

The sound grew—low and rolling, building across the open highway like distant thunder.

Inside the diner, a few heads turned.

Then more.

The shift was subtle at first.

Then undeniable.

Chairs stopped moving.

Voices faded.

Everyone felt it.

The change in the air.

The biker stood.

No hesitation now.

“Finish what you can,” he told her. “We’re leaving.”

She slid off the booth instead, moving closer to him.

“I’m not hungry,” she said.

“I know,” he replied.

He took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders, the leather swallowing her small frame.

“Stay close,” he added.

She grabbed onto the side of it instantly.

Outside, the first riders appeared—cutting through the heat haze, engines roaring louder as they pulled into the lot.

One.

Then five.

Then more.

They didn’t circle.

Didn’t hesitate.

They arrived like they already knew where to be.

Helmets came off.

Eyes locked onto him.

Waiting.

He stepped outside with the girl beside him.

The heat hit harder now—but it didn’t matter.

Nothing did except what came next.

“She gave a name,” he said.

That was all.

It moved through them instantly.

Not loud.

But powerful.

One of the older riders shook his head slightly.

“I was hoping we’d never hear that again.”

“Yeah,” the biker replied. “Me too.”

The girl looked up at him, her voice small but steady.

“Can you bring her back?”

He looked down at her.

Then back at the riders.

Then out toward the empty horizon.

Something settled inside him.

Not anger.

Not doubt.

Direction.

“Yes,” he said.

Simple.

Final.

“We can.”

Engines ignited again—this time all at once.

The sound filled the desert, breaking the silence that had held this place for too long.

He lifted her onto the bike in front of him, steadying her small hands on the handlebars.

“Hold on,” he said.

She did.

Tight.

As the convoy rolled out onto the highway, dust rising behind them, the girl leaned back slightly, her voice barely audible over the engines.

“Will we find her?”

The biker didn’t slow.

Didn’t look back.

“Yeah,” he said.

And this time—

It wasn’t just a promise.

It was something already in motion.
