On the other end, silence held for a fraction of a second\u2014then shifted into something sharper, faster, like gears catching all at once.<\/p>\n

\u201cConfirmed?\u201d the voice asked.<\/p>\n

The biker didn\u2019t look away from the table.<\/p>\n

From the girl.<\/p>\n

From the way her small hands held onto the edge of the plate like it might disappear if she let go.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

It was history.<\/p>\n

He leaned back slightly, exhaling through his nose, gaze drifting toward the window for a second.<\/p>\n

The desert outside hadn\u2019t changed.<\/p>\n

Still empty.<\/p>\n

Still quiet.<\/p>\n

But not for long.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long did you wait?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026until it got dark,\u201d she said. \u201cThen light again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Too long.<\/p>\n

But maybe not too late.<\/p>\n

He nodded once, then reached forward and gently pushed the remaining food closer to her.<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

A beat.<\/p>\n

\u201cEat anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

She picked at it slowly, more out of trust than hunger.<\/p>\n

Behind them, the diner had started to feel different.<\/p>\n

Quieter.<\/p>\n

Not peaceful.<\/p>\n

Watchful.<\/p>\n

A couple of the riders near the counter had already stood, pretending not to\u2014but their attention was locked in.<\/p>\n

They felt it too.<\/p>\n

The shift.<\/p>\n

The biker stood.<\/p>\n

No hesitation this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinish what you can,\u201d he told her. \u201cWe\u2019re leaving soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her head lifted slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo find her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simple.<\/p>\n

Certain.<\/p>\n

Outside, a distant engine broke the silence.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

The girl turned toward the window.<\/p>\n

Chairs scraped.<\/p>\n

Boots hit the floor.<\/p>\n

The girl stood quickly, moving closer to him without thinking.<\/p>\n

Her small hand found the edge of his jacket.<\/p>\n

He glanced down, then gently pulled his jacket off and wrapped it around her shoulders.<\/p>\n

The engines outside roared louder now, filling the air with something undeniable.<\/p>\n
