The door slammed shut behind them, cutting off the wind.<\/p>\n

Inside, the fire snapped louder\u2014like it knew something had just changed.<\/p>\n

Wade lowered the girl gently onto the couch, grabbing a blanket and wrapping it around her small frame. Snow melted into the fabric, leaving dark patches that spread slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey\u2026 stay with me,\u201d he said, kneeling beside her.<\/p>\n

Her eyes fluttered open.<\/p>\n

Tired. Cold.<\/p>\n

But still searching his face like she expected him to understand something he didn\u2019t want to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is your mother?\u201d he asked again, softer this time.<\/p>\n

The girl tightened her grip on the stuffed rabbit.<\/p>\n

The girl looked at him, her voice barely holding together.<\/p>\n

The fire cracked sharply.<\/p>\n

Wade leaned back like the name had hit him physically.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo\u2026\u201d he said under his breath. \u201cThat\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lena was gone.<\/p>\n

Not missing.<\/p>\n

Gone.<\/p>\n

Or at least\u2014that\u2019s what he had told himself long enough to believe it.<\/p>\n

The girl reached into her coat with shaking hands and pulled out something small.<\/p>\n

A folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n

Worn. Protected.<\/p>\n

She held it out to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe told me to give you this\u2026 if I found you.\u201d<\/p>\n

His fingers hesitated before taking it.<\/p>\n

Like touching it would drag the past back in whether he was ready or not.<\/p>\n

He unfolded it slowly.<\/p>\n

The handwriting was unmistakable.<\/p>\n

If she made it to you, then I didn\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t run because I stopped loving you.<\/em><\/p>\n

I ran because someone needed to survive what was coming.<\/em><\/p>\n

She\u2019s yours\u2026 not by blood, but by promise.<\/em><\/p>\n

You once told me this cabin was the only place that ever felt like home.<\/em><\/p>\n

So I\u2019m sending her there.<\/em><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t let her face the storm alone.<\/em><\/p>\n

The paper trembled in his hand.<\/p>\n

Then he stood, moving quickly now.<\/p>\n

More wood on the fire.<\/p>\n

Hot water on the stove.<\/p>\n

The girl watched him, quieter now.<\/p>\n
