The wind picked up\u2014but she didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Her daughter\u2019s small hand stayed raised, pointing toward the figure in the water like it was the most obvious truth in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cMama\u2026 he\u2019s right there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mother\u2019s throat tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she said softly, but the word had no strength in it now. \u201cThat\u2019s not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

She stopped.<\/p>\n

Because the man wasn\u2019t fading.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t a trick of light or distance.<\/p>\n

He was standing there<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Still.<\/p>\n

Real.<\/p>\n

The waves broke against his legs, but he didn\u2019t step back. Didn\u2019t react. Just watched the horizon like he had nowhere else to be.<\/p>\n

The girl took a step forward.<\/p>\n

The sand shifted under her steps as she moved closer to the water, her heartbeat louder than the crashing waves.<\/p>\n

The tattoo became clearer.<\/p>\n

An eagle.<\/p>\n

Spread wide across his chest.<\/p>\n

Exactly the same.<\/p>\n

Exactly where it had always been.<\/p>\n

Her breath came uneven now.<\/p>\n

Because she remembered the hospital room.<\/p>\n

The silence.<\/p>\n

The finality.<\/p>\n

She remembered letting go.<\/p>\n

She remembered believing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan\u2026\u201d she whispered, barely audible over the wind.<\/p>\n

The man didn\u2019t turn.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

She stepped into the water.<\/p>\n

Cold rushed around her ankles, but she didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan!\u201d she called again, louder this time.<\/p>\n

The name broke something in the air.<\/p>\n

Two figures were running down the shore.<\/p>\n

Authority.<\/p>\n

Too late.<\/p>\n

She looked back at Ethan\u2014<\/p>\n

and in that single moment, she understood something she hadn\u2019t before.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t just a return.<\/p>\n

This was something unfinished.<\/p>\n

Something that had never truly ended.<\/p>\n

Her daughter\u2019s voice carried from the shore\u2014<\/p>\n
