For a second, the diner held its breath.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s smile stayed in place\u2014but it didn\u2019t reach his eyes.<\/p>\n

Mason Rourke<\/span><\/span> didn\u2019t move from where he knelt in front of Lily.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunny thing,\u201d Mason said calmly, his voice carrying just enough, \u201cshe says different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man chuckled lightly, stepping closer. \u201cKids get scared. They say all kinds of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind Mason, Lily\u2019s fingers tightened in his vest.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not scared of everything,\u201d Mason replied. \u201cJust you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That landed.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s smile thinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook,\u201d he said, lowering his voice, \u201cI\u2019m not here to cause trouble. I\u2019m here to take her home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you came to the wrong place,\u201d Mason said.<\/p>\n

Chairs scraped louder now.<\/p>\n

Not nervous.<\/p>\n

Not uncertain.<\/p>\n

Just\u2026 ready.<\/p>\n

Three men stood. Then another. Boots hitting the floor in slow, deliberate rhythm.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s eyes flicked around the room, taking it in\u2014the weight of it, the shift in air, the fact that this wasn\u2019t going the way he planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re getting into,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mason finally stood.<\/p>\n

Tall. Solid. Unmoving.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand enough,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou\u2019re not her family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily\u2019s small voice came from behind him, shaking but clear. \u201cHe tried to grab me outside the gas station\u2026 I ran.\u201d<\/p>\n

That did it.<\/p>\n

The last bit of doubt in the room disappeared.<\/p>\n

Mason stepped forward once.<\/p>\n

The man stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s not make this bigger than it is,\u201d he said quickly now.<\/p>\n

Too quickly.<\/p>\n

Mason tilted his head slightly. \u201cToo late for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s hand twitched near his coat.<\/p>\n

Half the room noticed.<\/p>\n

That was his mistake.<\/p>\n

In an instant, the air snapped tight\u2014bodies angled, weight shifted, eyes locked.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d Mason said quietly.<\/p>\n

The word wasn\u2019t loud.<\/p>\n

But it was absolute.<\/p>\n

The man hesitated.<\/p>\n

Then, slowly, he raised his hands just enough to show they were empty.<\/p>\n

Smart.<\/p>\n

But not enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurn around,\u201d Mason said. \u201cWalk back out to that car\u2026 and keep driving.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man let out a breath, forcing a small laugh. \u201cYou really think this ends here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason\u2019s gaze didn\u2019t waver.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence stretched.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

a low rumble filled the parking lot.<\/p>\n

Engines.<\/p>\n

Multiple.<\/p>\n

Lily peeked past Mason\u2019s arm, eyes widening.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

Mason didn\u2019t look back.<\/p>\n

\u201cBackup,\u201d he said simply.<\/p>\n

Outside, motorcycles rolled in one by one, surrounding the gray sedan. No rush. No noise beyond the engines themselves.<\/p>\n

Control.<\/p>\n

The man heard it too.<\/p>\n

And this time, his composure cracked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just made a mistake,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

Mason took one more step forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cYou did. The second you followed her in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man glanced toward the door\u2014calculating, searching for a way out that didn\u2019t exist anymore.<\/p>\n

Behind Mason, Lily\u2019s grip loosened slightly.<\/p>\n

Not because she felt safe\u2014<\/p>\n

But because she was<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Mason didn\u2019t take his eyes off the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to sit down,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re going to start talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Mason\u2019s voice dropped lower.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr we take this outside\u2026 and it gets a lot less polite.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the moment it broke.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s shoulders sagged just a fraction.<\/p>\n

He understood.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t in control anymore.<\/p>\n

Slowly, he stepped back\u2026 then lowered himself into a chair.<\/p>\n

The room stayed silent.<\/p>\n

Watching.<\/p>\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n

Mason glanced down at Lily just once.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since she ran\u2014<\/p>\n

she believed it too.<\/p>\n

Because whatever she had escaped\u2026<\/p>\n

Had just run straight into something worse.<\/p>\n
