Not random notes.<br \/>\nOfficial.<br \/>\nEthan took them, flipping through just a few pages before his expression hardened.<br \/>\nNames.<br \/>\nPhotos.<br \/>\nRoutes.<br \/>\nNumbers that didn\u2019t belong in a child\u2019s bag.<br \/>\nHe looked up at Lena again\u2014this time differently.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere did you get these?\u201d<br \/>\nShe swallowed.<br \/>\n\u201cMy mom gave them to me,\u201d she said. \u201cShe told me if anything happened\u2026 I had to run. And find someone who wouldn\u2019t ask questions first.\u201d<br \/>\nEthan exhaled slowly.<br \/>\n\u201cThat explains the opening line,\u201d he muttered.<br \/>\nBrick reached into the bag again.<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<br \/>\nHe pulled out a small device this time\u2014black, scratched, blinking faintly.<br \/>\nA tracker.<br \/>\nActive.<br \/>\nEthan\u2019s eyes snapped to it.<br \/>\n\u201cHow long has that been in there?\u201d<br \/>\nLena shook her head. \u201cI don\u2019t know. She packed the bag.\u201d<br \/>\nBrick\u2019s voice dropped lower. \u201cThen they already know where she is.\u201d<br \/>\nThat changed everything.<br \/>\nEthan stood up immediately.<br \/>\n\u201cEverybody out,\u201d he said\u2014not loud, but sharp enough to cut through the entire diner.<br \/>\nPeople didn\u2019t argue.<br \/>\nThey moved.<br \/>\nFast.<br \/>\nChairs scraped. Bills were dropped. The room emptied in seconds, instinct kicking in before understanding.<br \/>\nThe waitress hesitated.<br \/>\nEthan looked at her once.<br \/>\n\u201cNow.\u201d<br \/>\nShe left.<br \/>\nThe bell above the door rang again\u2014this time as the last person stepped out.<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\nReal silence.<br \/>\nEthan turned back to Lena and crouched slightly so he was at her level.<br \/>\n\u201cListen to me carefully,\u201d he said. \u201cDid your mom say who was coming?\u201d<br \/>\nLena nodded faintly.<br \/>\n\u201cShe said\u2026 if they found me first\u2026\u201d Her voice shook. \u201cThey wouldn\u2019t ask questions.\u201d<br \/>\nBrick cracked his neck once, slow and deliberate.<br \/>\n\u201cFigures.\u201d<br \/>\nEthan glanced at the tracker again.<br \/>\nStill blinking.<br \/>\nStill broadcasting.<br \/>\n\u201cHow long since you got here?\u201d he asked.<br \/>\n\u201cFive minutes,\u201d Lena whispered.<br \/>\nEthan did the math instantly.<br \/>\nToo close.<br \/>\n\u201cBrick,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cYeah.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cKill it.\u201d<br \/>\nBrick didn\u2019t hesitate. He crushed the device under his boot, grinding it into the tile until the blinking stopped.<br \/>\nBut Ethan didn\u2019t relax.<br \/>\nBecause it was already too late for that.<br \/>\nOutside\u2014<br \/>\nHeadlights appeared.<br \/>\nOne.<br \/>\nThen two.<br \/>\nThen more.<br \/>\nEngines cutting through the quiet desert night.<br \/>\nLena\u2019s breath hitched. \u201cThat\u2019s them.\u201d<br \/>\nEthan stood slowly, his expression going still in a way that meant something dangerous had settled into place.<br \/>\n\u201cAlright,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nNo panic.
