Jax rode at the front, the address locked in his mind, every second stretching too long between where they were and where they needed to be.<\/p>\n
Behind him, the boy sat in the truck, wrapped in a heavy jacket, small hands gripping the edge of the seat like it was the only thing holding him together.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wasn\u2019t crying anymore\u2026\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n
That was the part that didn\u2019t let go.<\/p>\n

He tried the handle.<\/p>\n
Locked.<\/p>\n
A faint sound came from inside.<\/p>\n
Not clear.<\/p>\n
But enough.<\/p>\n
\u201cMove,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
His shoulder hit the door.<\/p>\n
Once\u2014<\/p>\n
Twice\u2014<\/p>\n
The frame cracked open.<\/p>\n
Inside, the air felt wrong immediately.<\/p>\n
Heavy.<\/p>\n
Thick.<\/p>\n
Water.<\/p>\n
He heard it before he saw it.<\/p>\n
Running.<\/p>\n
Overflowing.<\/p>\n
Down the hall.<\/p>\n

The bathroom door was closed.<\/p>\n

He broke it.<\/p>\n

Water spilled across the floor\u2014<\/p>\n
And there\u2014<\/p>\n
A small body in the tub.<\/p>\n
Still.<\/p>\n
Jax moved without thinking.<\/p>\n
Shut the faucet.<\/p>\n
Lifted the child out in one motion.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome on,\u201d he muttered, voice tight now. \u201cStay with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
No response.<\/p>\n
He turned, carrying him out fast.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow!\u201d he called.<\/p>\n
One of the bikers dropped to the floor immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cCall it,\u201d Jax snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlready done,\u201d came the reply from the front.<\/p>\n
Jax laid the boy down carefully.<\/p>\n
Water pooled beneath them.<\/p>\n
\u201cCome on\u2026 breathe,\u201d he said, starting first aid without hesitation.<\/p>\n
Seconds stretched thin.<\/p>\n
The room held its breath.<\/p>\n
Then\u2014<\/p>\n
A cough.<\/p>\n
Weak.<\/p>\n
But real.<\/p>\n
Jax didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n
\u201cStay with me,\u201d he said again.<\/p>\n
Another cough.<\/p>\n
Air.<\/p>\n
Ragged\u2014but there.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s breathing,\u201d someone said, relief breaking through.<\/p>\n
Jax leaned back slightly, watching the rise of the child\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n

Footsteps rushed behind him.<\/p>\n
