It felt like something uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">He looked at the clerk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to follow me,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The clerk shook her head. \u201cYes, I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A brief silence passed between them as the street moved on without care\u2014horns, footsteps, distant voices\u2014life continuing as if nothing important had just shifted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The old man slowly closed his fingers around the medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI thought I had already let it go,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI thought surviving meant\u2026 letting go of things like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The clerk studied him carefully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cAnd does it?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">He didn\u2019t answer right away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Because the truth wasn\u2019t simple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">It never was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Finally, he exhaled. \u201cIt means I stopped remembering why I kept it in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The clerk nodded slightly, as if that was the answer she expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t keep it for money,\u201d she said. \u201cYou kept it because it meant something when nothing else did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The old man looked down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That hit deeper than he wanted it to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For a moment, he saw flashes of another life\u2014uniforms, standing straight, noise, purpose, people shouting his name not for pity, but respect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Now, all of it felt far away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how to carry it anymore,\u201d he said honestly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The clerk stepped a little closer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cThen don\u2019t carry it the same way,\u201d she said. \u201cCarry what it stood for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">He frowned slightly. \u201cAnd what was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">She didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cValue,\u201d she said. \u201cNot price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">A pause followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The wind moved gently between them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The old man finally slipped the medal back into his pocket again, but this time, his hand didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The clerk extended the cash once more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cTake it,\u201d she said softly. \u201cNot as payment.
