The convoy didn\u2019t slow until the road narrowed into something quieter\u2014too quiet.<\/p>\n

Gravel replaced asphalt. Houses spread farther apart. Curtains drawn against the afternoon light. The kind of place where things could happen without witnesses.<\/p>\n

Jax lifted his hand.<\/p>\n

Engines dropped instantly\u2014still running, but restrained. The formation broke without confusion. Two riders peeled off to the back. Another circled wide. The truck carrying the boy rolled to a careful stop behind the line.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat one,\u201d the boy whispered from the passenger seat, pointing with a shaking hand.<\/p>\n

Small house.<\/p>\n

Faded paint.<\/p>\n

No sound.<\/p>\n

Jax didn\u2019t wait.<\/p>\n

He was off his bike before it settled, boots hitting the ground with purpose. Two others moved with him, not asking, not hesitating.<\/p>\n

At the door, he knocked once.<\/p>\n

Hard.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

He tried the handle.<\/p>\n

Locked.<\/p>\n

A glance to his left.<\/p>\n

A nod.<\/p>\n

\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n

His shoulder hit the door\u2014once, twice\u2014<\/p>\n

The frame cracked and gave way.<\/p>\n

Inside, the air felt wrong.<\/p>\n

Too still.<\/p>\n

Too heavy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack rooms,\u201d Jax said, already moving.<\/p>\n

Water.<\/p>\n

He heard it before he saw it.<\/p>\n

A steady overflow, echoing down a narrow hallway.<\/p>\n

He reached the bathroom door.<\/p>\n

Closed.<\/p>\n

Locked.<\/p>\n

No pause this time.<\/p>\n

He drove through it\u2014<\/p>\n

Wood splintered.<\/p>\n

Water spilled out across his boots.<\/p>\n

And there\u2014<\/p>\n

A small body in the tub.<\/p>\n

Too still.<\/p>\n

Jax moved instantly, shutting the faucet with one hand while reaching in with the other.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey\u2014hey, I got you,\u201d he said, voice sharp but steady.<\/p>\n

He lifted the boy out, soaked and unresponsive, and turned back into the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow!\u201d he called.<\/p>\n

One of the riders was already there, dropping to his knees.<\/p>\n

\u201cCall it,\u201d Jax snapped.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s in,\u201d came the reply from the front room\u2014location, urgency, everything already being relayed.<\/p>\n

Jax laid the child down carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, kid\u2026 breathe,\u201d he muttered, starting first aid without hesitation.<\/p>\n

Seconds stretched.<\/p>\n

Water pooled beneath them.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

A cough.<\/p>\n

Weak.<\/p>\n

But real.<\/p>\n

The rider beside him exhaled sharply. \u201cHe\u2019s fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStay with me,\u201d Jax said, not slowing, not easing.<\/p>\n

Another cough.<\/p>\n

Air.<\/p>\n

Ragged\u2014but there.<\/p>\n

Footsteps rushed in behind them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe older one?\u201d someone asked.<\/p>\n

Jax didn\u2019t look up. \u201cIn the truck. Keep him there.\u201d<\/p>\n

From outside, the faint rise of sirens cut through the stillness.<\/p>\n

Closer.<\/p>\n

Fast.<\/p>\n

Jax finally leaned back slightly, watching the child\u2019s chest rise again\u2014uneven, but moving.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

For now.<\/p>\n

He stood, water dripping from his sleeves, and looked down the hallway toward the front of the house.<\/p>\n

\u201cClear the rest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Two riders moved instantly, checking rooms, closets, anything that could hold another secret.<\/p>\n

Jax stepped outside.<\/p>\n

The younger brother sat in the truck, bottle still clutched in his hands, eyes locked on the door.<\/p>\n

Jax walked over, slower now.<\/p>\n

The boy searched his face.<\/p>\n

For an answer.<\/p>\n

Jax gave him one.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s breathing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The boy didn\u2019t cry.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n

He just closed his eyes for a second, like his body finally let go of something it had been holding too tight.<\/p>\n

Behind them, sirens grew louder, turning into flashing lights at the end of the road.<\/p>\n

Inside the house, water still dripped from broken edges.<\/p>\n

But the silence\u2014<\/p>\n

The one that mattered\u2014<\/p>\n
